FA bans use of "Yid" among football supporters

They use it themself don't they?
Yid army?

I understand they use it as a sign of unity. "If you call one of us Yid, you're up against us all. Yid Army." That kind of thing. At some point it becomes identity, however. I'd probably be ok with Yid Army using it, but Hammers making hissing/gas sounds at games has to go.

But hissing's on a totally different level to 'yid' which is just an abbreviation of yiddish, and should be connotation neutral, no?

I thought they tried this last year?

Would be happier if they banned that god awful "oh when the spurs" dirge of a chant instead TBH

good.
It is ridiculous and artificial "word" anyways.

I don't think it's just the fa banning it as unsociable, pressure's on to make the use a criminal offence.

Edit:
And biting and possibly match fixing by players gets relatively light punishment.

Mind numbingly stupid decision. The Spurs fans should be applauded for changing the connotation of the word in their local context rather than threatened for it.

are you serious?

Completely. Many Spurs fans would say the same, rightfully so.

In that article, for example. It's being made out like it's the Spurs fans fault for having a Jewish identity as to why they're getting stabbed by Roma/Lyon fans and hissed at by West Ham fans.

That is backward arse logic - the governing bodies actions should be against the perpetrators of those actions.

Spurs fans have simply taken the word "Yid", took the negative connotations away and wear it as a badge of honour, in respect of their roots. That should be massively applauded.

But I had the same discussion on here regarding lexis, connotation and linguistics, I know exactly how this thread is going to go!

so basically same thing as african americans did with N word.

anyways, how many % of spurs fans are actually jews? Not so many.

It is agitating and stupid imo and FA did right thing there

So thousands of people, most of whom aren't Jews, should be allowed to take a word which is highly offensive to many Jews and chant it because THEY aren't offended ?
