Extra Holiday Pay for Overtime

I've often thought that this should be the case as I've worked in countries where the system is different to ours.

In Holland (@Dutch Toffee will confirm if I have this right or not)

For the hours that you work you accrue Holiday Hours but alongside that you also earn Holiday Pay, I don't think that you earn extra hours for working overtime but your holiday pay increases.
I worked for an Agency over there and we got holiday pay based on hours worked, worked out much like it is here when you've only worked part of a year and they calculate how much holiday pay you are entitled to i.e. you work x amount of hours and you are entitled to an hours holiday pay.

This way when you have a week off you get whatever your Average weekly wage is.

Pretty certain it was average pay in NZ.

A job I did in Wrexham our contracted hours were more than the standard 38 so we used to get more holiday entitlement because firstly we'd worked more but also needed more hours to take a week off ...in theory like, because the way our shift rota worked we could book 2 nights off and get a full weeks holiday but that was just because of the way we worked the rota, we didn't get extra holidays for working overtime covering shifts but it did mean that it was done regularly, in fact for the part of the rota you could do this with you entitlement meant you only needed to work that part about 5 times a year.... & got time & 1/2 covering other folks. But if you was taking a fortnight off then you needed 84 hours to cover it, so thats why you got more hours.

If you regularly work o/t though then I think it's right that your holiday pay should be average earnings so that you aren't dropping down to basic pay when on hols.
I also think though that it should add to your holiday entitlement... work more for more time off.. kind of bank up hours to be taken either in lieu or paid at whatever rate the o/t is i.e. time & 1/2, double whatever.

Shocks me that they don't get Holiday Pay in most jobs in U.S.

I don't know if they are allowed x amount of days off without pay per year like ?

Although...

In the job I used to do in Engineering they get paid way more in relative terms over there, and even if you took off 26 days unpaid in a year then you would still be way better off than in the same job here with holiday pay.

Holiday entitlement for a year is based on you working 36 hours -52 weeks a year.

So if you work 48 hours a week then you should be entitled 33% more days off.... so instead of 26 holiday days (or x hours) that should be increased by the same percentage.

It will hopefully help to put zero hour contracts to bed.

tbh, that's the new name for something thats been going on for years... particularly in manufacturing where they would have you on a probationary/trial period for upto 6 months, then they get rid citing lack of work & take on someone else almost straight away, that way they don't have to take anyone on permanently avoiding redundancy pay and probably a lot of other things as well.

If you regularly work overtime then when you have a week off you are on basic pay so get less, if holiday pay is based on your 'usual wage' or 'average' then you don't get less.

But I also think that exta hours you work should accrue more holiday entitlement.

Cheers mate, makes sense. There's a grey area somewhere, but, in principle it sounds sensible.

Hopefully not totally, just the bad ones where zero-hours contracts tie you into one employer and are just a way of avoiding taking on permie staff.

I'm working on three zero-hours contracts at the moment and it suits my circumstances perfectly.

Yeah I understand that and I would actually like one, however in most cases it's a bad thing. I'd rather see them all go than them remain as we are. Difficult to regulate though.

I did a 14 hour day yesterday and got a flat day rate.

Easy job like, but I laugh at the 'Norms' and all their 8 hour 'days'. That's a Half Day for old McB.
