I know that Moyes is loathe to change his formation or starting eleven, but teams such as Blackpool and West Brom have demonstrated that being bold and adventurous pays dividends. What tweaks would you like to see DM test out?
The left side of midfield is an issue. Should Pienaar, as expected, leave at the end of the season, it could be some time before we settle on an adequate replacement. Why not move Peanuts around the midfield to outfox the opposition, while we consider our options? Bily, Gueye and Anichebe could do a job there. Some are even calling for Baines to be pushed forward. Neville could sit in behind him.
We've yet to find a potent formula upfront. Is Beckford two light-weight to lead the line by himself? Could we accommodate a front two as well as Cahill? What about a Christmas tree formation?
Howard's form has been pretty erratic this term. How much of a clanger would he need to drop for Mucha to get a start? How rusty is the Slovak, should our number 1 get an injury?
I can appreciate that the Premier League is tighter than ever and that Moyes always wants to put out his strongest eleven, but I don't think that he's learning anything about the squad by having a game plan that he rigidly sticks to. We have nothing to surprise the opposition with or to take the initiative in a game because we have no plan b. It comes across that throwing extra strikers on is an act of desperation rather than something that had been worked on in training. If Blackpool can change their entire line up for the trip to Villa and still compete, then I'm sure that we can afford the odd experimental switch.
