When the Expendables 3 was released in the US on 15 August many people around the world had already seen it. A high-quality version of the film appeared on the internet on 25 July and was viewed many hundreds of thousands of times in the UK alone.
Two men have today been arrested by detectives from the City of London police on suspicion of leaking the action movie, which stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarzenegger, ahead of its release date. The men, who were arrested at their homes in West Yorkshire and Merseyside, are both in their thirties and are believed to have stolen the film from a cloud-based system.
The fact that so many people watched the film online for free ahead of its official release is thought to have had a significant impact on Lionsgate and Millennium films, costing them millions of pounds in this country alone.
