Everton Youth Teams Thread

Looking abit rosier with the changes made the last 12 months.
Especially in the players in that 17-19 age bracket.
Next step after January for a few of them should be wanting to branch out to mens football. Which is easier said than done, a wrong move or loan (which we all know) to a struggling side or a manager who prefers experience (i look at Louis Barrys time at ipswich so far) isnt always the best option.

Tbf we've just had Mills at right back for 4 or 5 games and it didn't go very well. I agree that Mallon should start getting games after Christmas though, that feels like the natural move. Hopefully we'll sign a specialist left back for the 23s in January too

i dont think hes ever played as a right back for us, he maybe had 2 or 3 games as wing-back

Tomayto Tomarto as the Americans would say. If you struggle to defend as a wing back, you're going to struggle to defend as a full back.

its a completely different position, we've had good full backs that have been terrible as wing backs.
and 2 games is hardly enough to make a judgment on that either

I think what @oglop44 is trying to say is the reason he stopped playing with number 2 in his back is because of his defensive failings. All his games had been at RWB so far. If he plays RB the defensive frailties will be even more obvious. John won't make it with us at RB because his defending is so poor he is also a converted winger. I would like to see Higgins given a go there at some point as he was tried in a couple of u18s games before his injury. As Carragher said full backs are usually failed wingers or failed centre backs. The way football has gone they generally need to be failed wingers as full backs are more of an attacking tool. Mallon RB is his main position so hopefully his game is reasonably developed in both defensive skill set and attacking. Ashley Cole and Gary Neville both had the perfect balance but these types are in a minority. They also need to look at Campbell and decide what his best position is. If it's LB continue with what they are doing if he's a CB and only going to be makeshift LB they should be getting him game time at CB in preferably the u23s but if not the u18s. No point in wasting his development time on a position he might never play. I think that was part of what hindered Kenny as he played a lot of his youth team games at CB and he never grew enough so had to go back to RB. I'm not saying that's why he failed but I think it may have contributed. Connolly was another he suffered being versatile as he could do most positions to a reasonable level but was never going to be good enough in a particular position to be a starter at a club wanting what we want. Mills has recently been playing RW which might be an opportunity as most wingers what to play on the left as it allows them to cut in.

but thats not true, he doesnt play wing back when John is in the team which is near every game

I agree when John starts he plays RW. But recently he has been starting games at RWB when John was out injured. I don't think there has been a game where Mills has played RB. He's either played RW when John has started or RWB when John was out injured.

yeh but John was only injured for 2 or 3 games, that is not enough to make a judgement on mills imo

It’s rather bizarre how few “pure” full backs have emerged from the u18s to the U23s in recent years. LB seems to have been mainly left footed CBs playing there except for he who- we- no-longer- mention. RB has been a series of midfielder/ wingers we’ve tried to convert. I know over the years we’ve had a number of England/Wales u16/17 full backs but they never kicked on from our u18s.

We do however seem to have proper full backs in the current u18s with Mallon and the currently injured Roman Dixon /Quintyne on the right , Ishe Samuels-Smith and I think Harry Wright on the left . Hopefully two , or more, will emerge as U23s full backs.

Clear pathway for Onyango to come through with Doucoure being his competition and 29 in January.

Hopefully he can push his way into the first team squad as a backup and then a rotation option for Doucoure.

Ideally in 2-3 seasons time he's competing for the starting position.

….I think he’s just played his first game in 6 months, so it might take a while for Benitez to assess him & for him to get up to speed. He’s a terrific athlete be interesting if quality in possession has improved.

Abit like Dobbin, it looks like he has used his time in the gym well! Looks a lot less gangly and a lot more filled out!

Unsworth has said he’s played 45 mins , a 60 mins in practice and now the 80 mins competitively. He’s also confirmed he’s bulked up a bit with gym work.
How’s the eye mate?
