My son once played against three games against Grimsby's academy, which is category three. They lost two of the games and drew one.

Quite simply, Grimsby had been told to get the ball up the pitch quickly and score, whereas the boys were unequivocally told to retain the ball and play out.

The number of goals scored and the result were unimportant, as it was all about building a way of playing and applying set routines. The coaches were content.

Now I am not saying that's what this was last night, rather that results at academy football often don't paint a true picture.
I think last night we saw Southern play his main four attackers at once because he wanted a) to entertain a crowd and b) to give them all a chance to make a little bit of history. Which I can understand on a morale / human level but was very unbalanced tactically.

So maybe a tactical mistake, although in a friendly not exactly a catastrophic one. The lads could’ve played better but ultimately there’s just so little there to really judge them on.

It's not really individual results that count for me, it is which player or any come through the Academy and into the first team. Was very impressed with Braiden Graham last night, looks a player, if he keeps progressing the way he is he has a chance, fingers crossed for him.

That the number 11? If so, he looked really light on his feet and moved forward well. Lots of our positive moments went through him.
