A last-gasp goal from Lukas Jutkiewicz earned the Blues a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.
It looked like Everton would leave the Halton Stadium without a point but the young striker fired home a deserved equaliser deep into injury time after the Magpies leading through a Shola Ameobi penalty on 64.
Within 30 seconds the Blues had a penalty claim waved away by the referee Metcalfe. Andy van der Meyde’s teasing cross looked to have been handled in the area by Newcastle left-back Alex Patterson - despite furious claims the appeal went unnoticed.
John Paul Kissock, who has been placed on standby for England under 19s’ forthcoming match with Germany, had the first opportunity of the evening. The nippy midfielder cut inside from the wing firing a powerful shot straight at the Newcastle keeper.
It was end to end stuff at the Halton Stadium before Shola Ameobi wasted the Magpies’ best chance. The England under 21 international managed to escape his marker but could only fire his header wide of John Ruddy’s goal.
The Blues nearly went a goal to the good on 21 minutes. Lukas Jutkiewicz found himself one on one with the goalkeeper after latching onto a clever through ball but the young striker could only direct his low shot into the side netting.
Anderson de Silva sparked the game into life after restart when he tested the reflexes of Fraser Foster with a rising effort on 56 minutes after a mazy run fooling the Newcastle defence.
Sustained pressure on the Magpies goal followed with a neat one two between van der Meyde and Vidarsson with the latter forcing Fraser into a smart save from six yards out.
Moments later Newcastle took the lead through Ameobi on 64 minutes. Patrick Boyle upended James Troisi in the area leaving the referee with no choice but to ward a spot kick and Ameobi made no mistake to score past Ruddy.
An excellent piece of skill from Aidan Downes nearly restored parity just seconds later. The Republic of Ireland under 21 international hit the crossbar with a neat volley.
Two minutes from time, Vidarrson had a glorious chance to level the score but the Icelander could only drag his shot wide from six yards out before Jutkiewicz gave the Blues a deserved point deep into stoppage time with a powerful shot from 10 yards.
