Everton marketing

Bernard and Richarlison Brazilian, Howard from the US; Cahill, Australian; Pienaar South African yet we don't even think about trying to tap into those audiences.
We're a small minded club and will always be until we have real leaders at the top rather than those just happy to be in the Premier League. It's been going on since Kendall left the club (first time) and hasn't stopped since. We hired Harvey, who admitted he wasn't a manager but a coach. Then there was the invention of the Premier League which we never realised would be so huge so didn't take it seriously. List of failures include: Kings Dock, Martinez, Koeman, Silva, lack of exposure in the City, hiring in house instead of hiring the best CEO and marketing people. The list goes on and on...

Jobs for the boys

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of talk on here and by Evertonians about how the club/manager outwardly project a small club mentality i.e. not standing up for ourselves in the face of shocking VAR decisions etc.

I think it goes much further than that and definitely into the marketing and merchandising of the club itself. In my view, those running the marketing department of the club have been asleep at the wheel for quite a number of years.

I think there is so much the club can do to get new fans interested in the club and that goes well beyond the limits of the city itself.

One idea I thought of (potentially for selfish reasons that I love watching football in new places) is that Everton could link up with a different club every season whereby our season ticket holders get one ticket to a match of the other club and vice versa.

This would allow Evertonians to go and see decent football abroad (even if we arent getting it at home) and it would also bring in potential new supporters from abroad who might see one game and come back for more. In an ideal world, we would link up with clubs like Dortmund who are supposed to have an amazing atmosphere at games.

It could also create useful links that we could rely on when tracking youngsters around Europe.

I am sure there are reasons why this might not work that others could think of but similarly, I am sure others on here can come up with ideas that the club could benefit from. Any thoughts?

Marketing is important but the cost of marketing has to be justified by the income from results. Initially we need to concentrate more locally because we have a large catchment area with a lot of opportunities. There is a good mileage in each direction before there is another Premiership club(apart from the RS of course) The whole of the Wirral, the East Lancs and environs to the outskirts of Manchester/Salford. up to the North and you can't find another Prem club till Newcastle(Prestons support is VERY local to Preston). The catchment area is MASSIVE. The RS will always attract out of towners in particular because they occasionally win something or get close to it, but despite the moanings on here sometimes, we are an attractive club and should reap the benefits. The blue lighting on the Liver Buildings was excellent, the Everton FC banners should be there permanently, and when the new stadium happens(!) there should be blue lighting along the waterfront from the Pier Head to Bramley Moor. There should be a very large subsidised discount for junior season tickets, and an even lower rate for under tens so the parents are encouraged to bring their kids. Have more interation between players and juniors/families...I think we do this well but it can always be better and more accessible. Have more open training sessions at GP with autograph sessions ...I don't think there should be public access to Finch Farm so switch the odd session to GP and open to the public using a free ticket obtained at a game or at the ticket office.Make efforts to increase the mailing list and use it for mail shots more aggressively. Etc ..etc. But the biggest marketing ploy of all is to have a successful team.

For visitors to our city, we exhibit near zero visible promotion.

The RS crap is everywhere.

it’s not like we‘d welcome them, imagine the things all the foreign fans coming over here tell their own locals when they get home about the hostility they felt from Blues. We don’t exactly embrace these foreign fans.We don’t do ourselves any favours. Most of our fans slag the RS off for all their tourists whilst we are quite proud of being a parochial club, having mostly scousers as supporters. The People’s Club, Born not Manufactured and all that codswallop. It can’t go unnoticed with these tourists that we are not the most welcoming of them. Our attitude as fans needs to change if we are to attract more tourists.

Its long been a discussion point this.

I remember when Tim Howard did really well for the USA in a world cup. We had pages of suggestions and input from professionals on how the club could capitalise on the US football market. The basic narrative was the working mans club, class against the Arabs and Russians, appealing to Main Street Joe basically. And we had lads who were into video production, PR folk, all sorts, saying it would fly in the States.

The club? Nada.

So frustrating.

Hi.

Howard led me to Everton before 2014.

After that 2014 WC QF game against Belgium, with 16 saves (WC record) and USA almost pulling off the upset, he was a huge celebrity for awhile, appearing in ads, on TV shows, etc.

If the club had capitalized by touring the States in the summer, using Howard in marketing here, etc. it would have pulled in some fans.

The bolded isn't too far off from the way the club appealed to me once I started watching. Goodison was another draw. But I first got to the club because of Timmeh and also Landon Donovan, who also said that Everton missed a chance by failing to promote stateside.

Howard is now retired from Colorado and is an Everton "ambassador" in the States, making appearances at events, etc. It's better than nothing but it should have been done a long time ago.

Edit: already covered by other Yanks, I see.

Well of course not -- they're all Kopites!

Always room for a couple more “good eggs” mate!

I'm not too sure how much effect marketing has in the sense that some of you are talking. Does Everton pushing their presence in the USA after Howard's performances really get us new fans? Who are they? My guess would be the people who are inclined to support the team their hero/favourite player plays for have already decided to do it at that point, the people who aren't really interested aren't swayed by marketing, and the people who follow another club already need something substantial to change their mind. What is our marketing strategy to make them change allegiance? Short of giving them tickets for a game and flights over, I don't really know what we can do to make those people start following Everton.

Casual fans don't want to attach themselves to a midtable side who rarely do anything of any note. The best thing about supporting Everton is actually going to the games; the history, the passion of the fans, the pride in the club, just being part of it. If you're thousands of miles away and can never go to games, I don't really know what our selling point is.

football has been compared to religion many times... Many of the clubs are evangelical but we are more like the Jewish faith. We are bonded to MOT but not looking to bring in converts. All that born not manufactured and once a blue... stuff.

Went into the main shop in Liverpool One the other day, asked for the 2020 calendar, 'not in stock'.

Went to HMV and bought one.
