In recent weeks, there has been a lot of talk on here and by Evertonians about how the club/manager outwardly project a small club mentality i.e. not standing up for ourselves in the face of shocking VAR decisions etc.

I think it goes much further than that and definitely into the marketing and merchandising of the club itself. In my view, those running the marketing department of the club have been asleep at the wheel for quite a number of years.

I think there is so much the club can do to get new fans interested in the club and that goes well beyond the limits of the city itself.

One idea I thought of (potentially for selfish reasons that I love watching football in new places) is that Everton could link up with a different club every season whereby our season ticket holders get one ticket to a match of the other club and vice versa.

This would allow Evertonians to go and see decent football abroad (even if we arent getting it at home) and it would also bring in potential new supporters from abroad who might see one game and come back for more. In an ideal world, we would link up with clubs like Dortmund who are supposed to have an amazing atmosphere at games.

It could also create useful links that we could rely on when tracking youngsters around Europe.

I am sure there are reasons why this might not work that others could think of but similarly, I am sure others on here can come up with ideas that the club could benefit from. Any thoughts?

Its long been a discussion point this.

I remember when Tim Howard did really well for the USA in a world cup. We had pages of suggestions and input from professionals on how the club could capitalise on the US football market. The basic narrative was the working mans club, class against the Arabs and Russians, appealing to Main Street Joe basically. And we had lads who were into video production, PR folk, all sorts, saying it would fly in the States.

The club? Nada.

So frustrating.

Be boss linking up with Dortmund and singing YNWA in Germany with the German kopites.

That just shows the issue - they werent always kopites but sadly like everything else, Liverpool have a better outreach programme than Everton do.

It might be a case of trial and error in finding what works but every now and again, one trial will come off and these German kopites might never come to fruition because Everton get there first. With the amount of riches flowing through the PL at the moment, the long term progress of the club depends on attracting new fans beyond the limits of the current imagination within our marketing department.

Im all for ideas mate but the best piece of marketing is winning trophies.

It really isnt mate. It helps like, but its a solid GOT fact that we have attracted more posters from Australia and Merica cos of Cahill, Howard, and Sir L.

I am happy to be corrected, but as far as I am aware, Everton FC have done zero marketing in Oz or Merica on the back of those players.

Lob in *random foreign players*, and it becomes a pretty depressing critique of our "marketing" dept.

THIS!

I’d wager that Man City’s global fanbase has grew substantially in the past decade.

And it ain’t cause they’ve got a good marketing team.
The club is on the rise. Since 2010, their global fanbase has risen to 38 million—four times the figure from eight years ago. The number of supporters' club branches outside of the UK has grown radically too, from six in 2008 to 116 this season.

There is still a long way to go to catch rivals United—who boast a reported global fanbase of 659 million—but there is reason to believe they can close the gap.

Well the logical step to take from that blunt assessment is to not bother marketing the club until we win the League Cup then.

As I have posted above, you can only market what you have to offer a market. It has been criminal how we let opportunities to do slip away.

And I bet in every single home town these Muricans and Skippys live in they are dwarfed by fans from City, Liverpool, United, Chelsea and even Spurs.

I know we’re inept in this department (like most others.)

And I’m not saying we shouldn’t do any kind of marketing, but the only way to truly boost your supporters, is through trophies.

Or having a boss team on FIFA

So you paint a different narrative. You focus on the player, then draw a picture about the club; working class, unique, history makers, whatever. But you do SOMETHING.

Its the best way, no doubt. In the absence of them, you sell what you do have.
