It's the net result of a systematic devaluation of our status under Moyes (knife to a gunfight, top ten is great for a club like Everton etc. etc.) and the woeful underachievement of Martinez in the last two years.
Sky have taught football fans that only their narrative and the present day matters, and this 'debate' proves as such, as the question 'Are Everton a bigger club than Southampton' should be answered, without hesitation, 'of course they are you idiot, why even ask?'
Even at our very worst in the 90s, we were always seen as a massive club doing really badly. Nowadays, we're seen as 'plucky little Everton', and it's more surprising when we do well.
This degrading of status is the reason I simply don't accept failure at Everton. When Martinez was obviously not the man for the job, the counter argument on here was 'who could we get to replace him though?' - like we couldn't possibly do better than him. My answer to that - 'why the hell wouldn't we replace him? We should never tolerate failure. We're Everton.'
