Actually, Everton Football Club refers to the business entity, so the singular is correct.

Actually, he didn't say Everton Football Club, he said Everton which could refer to several different things, some of which are singular (e.g. the place) and some of which are plural (e.g. the players), so both could be correct, depending on the context.
