EVERTON last night stoked up the respect row with Liverpool FC in the wake of Rafael Benitez's dig at Toffee fans
Benitez criticised Everton's away support in the wake of Sunday's derby, claiming they showed 'a lack of respect' with chants aimed at Steven Gerrard at Anfield.
Now Everton have asked the police to investigate captain Phil Neville's claim he was punched in the back by a fan
Ian Ross, Everton's Head of PR, tonight hit back and said: "Whilst we would never condone the singling out of individual players for vitriolic insults, it is a shame that Mr Benitez chose to ignore the actions of his own club's supporters.
"Not only was Joleon Lescott subjected to an afternoon-long barrage of quite disgusting and quite audible abuse, Phil Neville was seemingly spat at several times and was also punched in the back by a supporter as he took a throw-in.
"We have asked Merseyside Police and our Safety Officer to look into the matter.
"In calling for Everton supporters to respect his players, Mr Benitez should, perhaps, remember his comments of 12 months ago when he sought to belittle one of world sport's oldest and most respected institutions by describing us as a 'small club'. Respect is a two-way street."

I hope Benitez stays at Liverpool for some time. The man is an idiot.
 

I suppose that tosser thinks its OK for his fans to threaten the Liverpool owners lives especially when he has stoked the fires of hatred toward those individuals He is a dangerous loon and should be shown up by the media as such

By the way I don't condone any thing our supporters may have done either

Oh well, if Neville was physically assualted then he had every right to storm off the pitch in a huff. There's no need for that and Liverpool should be ashamed of themselves.

benitez would probably not have heard anything aimed at lescottas anything racial seems to be outside the frequency limits for spaniards ears, i suppose his comments are what we should expect from someone who originates from a lesser country than our own, obviously moral standards in his homeland must leave a lot to be desired, he's probably one of franco's kids

Is this man really serious about accusing Everton fans of being unsporting, to coin a phrase 'he cannot be serious'. The vile filth Liverpool fans have hurled at opposing teams is legendary, they chanted total abuse about Lee Carsley and his work with Downes Syndrome kiddies, one of Lee's children have that ailment. Benitez must look at his own so called supporters long before attempting to attack others or does he condone the death threats those same supporters have made against the club owners, threats carried out because of problems he caused.

I am an Evertonian of many years standing and I cannot condone any chanting of that type no matter what the source but Benitez's pompous hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Wound me up reading the reports yesterday regarding the so-called misbehaviour of our support when them lot acted like they scum they are throughout. How do they keep getting away with it?

There is a huge difference between being punched and spat on and having chants sung at you. Although it's not right to personally abuse players, physically hitting them is significantly worse

Agreed. It was clear on the tv coverage that nothing was thrown at Gerrard, he was not spat at or physically assaulted. Ok, he tokk a barrage of insults but there is no way you can equate that with what happened to Neville

it's ridiculous. obviously though, they couldn't investigate the RS fans abuse without finding something wrong with the everton fans as well
