60k stadium which is always full, and Schalke is situated in the 2nd most populous metropolitan area in mainland Europe (Ruhrgebiet: 8m+ people). They've finished 2nd in the league too loads of times...poor buggers.

Because he's running a solid ship but one which is lacking in two key areas:

1) better commercial opportunities
2) massive external investment

It's a matter of debate how much we blame him for the first point. It's the Board's job to worry about the second point.

Just on commercial revenues, there is an element of comparing apples and pears here. Different clubs place different sources of revenue in the commercial bracket, most are quoting gross revenues not net. Everton's quoted commercial revenues are almost totally net revenues as the cost of generating the revenues are mainly met by the outsourced partner.

Having said that our commercial performance is still extremely poor - this is a function of a lack of working capital and thus the ability to recruit the right people into the role.
 
The TV money has put us in a very secure position. Essentially it has got us out of jail. How the club hasn't been able to be marketed better I will never know and I am uncomfortable in Elstone et al taking credit for essentially sky ploughing money into the premier league.

We would be screwed if the sky money went. So would most of the others though, albeit more indirectly. For United they have a lot of additional revenue but a huge debt to pay off. Liverpool are also accruing debt and without the TV revenue would have probably be left with owners who lose interest.

For the more London based teams without the top players and prestige of the premier league I wonder how long their sponsors would hang around. City/Chelsea would probably go bust within the space of years if not months if their owners packed it in.

The best strategy is to try and use the money being brought in for longer term projects. It amazes me that the club hasn't bought the training ground. Likewise they should really be looking at building infrastructure with it, museum, apartments as Martinez said. This is what Arsenal appear to have done on their site at the new ground, with flats being built on it. They are solid assets that will survive beyond any potential reduction in TV money.

We are seemingly at least paying the debt down.

Everton are really big in America, mainly due to Tim Howard. That ship has nearly sailed. I am amazed we never tried to make more of it.
