Everton fans Attacked in Lille

In the times I've been abroad with the Blues - sadly not there today - there has been practically no incidents. Take the two trips to Lisbon when the team got heavily beaten both times, not a sniff of trouble... Nuremberg was superbly policed... Rotterdam, we even played footie with the local bobbies... and I don't recall any incidents at Villareal either. So why when we make our shortest trip do things kick off?
We've got a great reputation that will likely now be soured.
The team needs to win now to make it all worthwhile for the guys and gals who are there, and particularly those who may have been hurt.

Note that all of the 30-40-year-old guys "rioting" in the centre of the photo appear to be Lille plain-clothes (apart from the one in green who is being taken away by them). You can see the batons.

the best part about that picture is that you see all those plain clothe officers running at everyone else whilst everyone else is looking up from their pint thinking 'wtf?'.

The foreign police love it and tend to lash out when ever they can,
Seen it before myself, first hand at Villareal train station.

My point is that those images will be used against our supporters by the media. We haven't seen any pictures of the police goading or provoking Evertonians, even though it appears to be the case.

Nevertheless, throwing bottles is a thuggish reaction. I think most sensible Blues like yourself are well advised to walk away rather than react.

Throwing bottles at armoured police is the pinnacle of decorum placed next to teargassing kids.

Not the most astute response, definitely inadvisable, but it's hard to judge someone for throwing back whatever's to hand.

What's needed now is some serious cooling down, both by the fans and the French police.
Our fans must stay calm and maybe even stop drinking immediately as sure as eggs are eggs, anyone remotely looking under the influence will get refused entry to the ground and more incidents might occur if that happens.
And the British press corps there MUST report accurately on what they have witnessed... intimidation, attacks, retaliation, passiveness - we don't need to hear hysterical reports of destruction that patently is not visible in any of the photos provided to date despite whatever some French headline seeking politician might be saying.

@GrandOldTeam it's in the Guardian now.

They cite GoT! http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/oct/23/everton-fans-attacked-lille-europa-league-clash

The plain clothes with the green rucksack has got a pistol. WTF sh!thole is this?

The Lille police have been gearing themselves up for this for weeks. That fact that everything was peaceful they were going to use anything to make this happen. The flare going of was probably the trigger. The good thing is pre social media this would be put down to hooliganism now the real actions of the police can be seen and judged.
