Everton defence

Too early to properly judge Galloway, Browning and Mori, even though they all look very promising.
Baines, Coleman and Stones will slot straight back in when fit so the real test will be if the improvement continues when they return.
Agree with what others have said about Jagielka playing a big part, can't underestimate how important he is to us. The glue for our young defenders coming through.
Still wish we would sort out the defending set pieces and get some serious competition for Howard though.

All those who were saying Roberto couldn't defend or even buy a decent defender, what do you think now? Do you think this is just a fluke based on the fact that some kids have played out of their skins or do you think he has cracked it? He has undoubtedly benefited from some of Moyses signings at the back, but I get the feeling he has sorted himself out defensively now! We play out from the back when the opportunity is there and sky it when it isn't which is the way we should defend in my opinion!

TBF the people saying Martinez's teams couldn't defend were right... they couldn't.. great to see how much we improved this season, to the point we actually can.
3 clean sheets in 10 is decent when put in context of our run, still give away easy chances pretty much every game. Much better though, gives me a lot of optimism for the season.

In his first season Martinez played with a very high line which seemed to work most of the time and allowed us to get tight and recapture possession quickly. We seemed to eschew this approach last season and I couldn't tell you what the plan was as we were all over the shop most of the time. This year we seem better drilled and are getting back quicker and dropping deep and only occasionally pressing high. I think we're more geared for the counter but the swamping of our defensive third is making us harder to play through also.

I'm sure that's the first ever outing for such a fine word as 'eschew' here on GOT.....nice work.

To say Roberto can't find a defender was a little harsh. He nearly signed Stones, while Moyes was dithering.
Moyes made mistakes signing defenders like Koldrup and letting good ones leave. That German lad who has a world cup winners medal and Dier who is now doing well for Spurs. I echo how well the 3 new lads have come in during these injuries. Maybe we're seeing why we didn't go out and buy loads of players? Galloway especially has looked great. I wounder if Baines is worried? Lol Browning deserves credit too.

According to reports on tinterweb we've put a bid in for 17 year left footed Bury centre back Matty Foulds.

I must admit I do like Martinez's policy of buying a few promising youngsters.

Think we've got two good back fours now.

Coleman Stones Jagielka Baines

&

Browning Funes-Mori Galloway Oviedo

That's a good eight to choose from, although could still do with a keeper that isn't rank and natural right back cover.

All for nothing when you have a rank goalkeeper. How many more points would we have this season with even an average keeper? People just seem to laugh off this huge weakness though. A decent keeper claims that corner, we score and all of a sudden we are 1 up against a team with no clue and no hope. Mignolet stopped his side being on the end of a whitewash and Howard couldn't even catch a ball a yard away from him.

With the way we've been playing we should be far higher up in the league. Barkley Lukaku Stones Galloway Jagielka have been some of the best performers in the league every single week yet we're in 7th because yet again the same old suspects undermine what we're doing. This team could do anything but I fear we won't see it because the players I've listed above along with Deulofeu Browning Garbutt Besic Mirallas will be gone by the time we finally stop Howard from having his job for life.
Agreed but it's hard to convince some unusual posters that improvement is a good thing

....there's no doubt we have real quality and depth in our back four resource pool. Saying that, all the natural ability in the world still needs to be coached. We have conceded two poor goals from corners in recent games, everybody needs to know their jobs and the defence has to work as a unit.
