I'd probably get a company car lease, as they'll service it and repair it, + give you a courtesy car if it breaks down.

In relation to the actual car you should go for, my advice would be a top of range (ghia/titanium) ford focus/mondeo. You get, relatively cheaply, all round leccy windows, cruise con, air con/climate control and what not. Also good on reliability and cheapness/availability of parts.
