Transfer Rumour Evan Ferguson

Funny thing is I think the first compassion I heard to Shearer was Shearer saying it himself.

Same stuff could have been said about Gordon to Newcastle btw, they paid for a player who'd not shown anything on a regular basis and who basically refused to train showing a certain unprofessional attitude doing so. But he worked out.

The markets changed mate, 40m doesn't get you a guarantee of anything these days.
Nothing guarantees anything. But spending what is rumoured to be all of our money on a gamble seems foolish and says to me we haven’t learnt anything.

It’s a little different going from us to Newcastle though. Newcastle genuinely have a top class striker and a great midfield supporting him which he didn’t have here.

Everyone goes on about how good brightons set up is (even maupay looked decent there), and then expect him to come to our team and do what exactly? Make all our other players 10x better? Make Doucoure look like an actual number 10? Make Harrison turn into Mitoma?

Personally don’t think he is worth £40m. There is potential, and I’d love him to prove me wrong, but he hasn’t done enough or been consistent enough to warrant that fee. If he was as good as being made out, it wouldn’t be us and West Ham supposedly scrapping for him when Arsenal have needed a striker.

If he comes, great, as everyone is right about that he is the sort of player we should be wanting to sign. Just needs to be the right price and we need some pragmatism about our current position.

Problem is we don't know either how much PSR room we have or what budget we have available either now or in the summer mate. And how flexible that figure is.

In terms of funding can only look at Roma as a baseline example, first window they invested 105m net in transfers, and that was into a squad that was a regular European qualifier at the time. They'd be blind if they thought we didn't need a significant increase over that number giving the shape of the squad and the strength of league compared to Seria A.

PSR can be worked around this season (multi club model makes that v easy) plus we will have in the summer large scope in that regard.

If we are operating under a presumption of say a total of 100m into the team in total this summer and anything this Jan comes outta that, then frankly TFG are putting in maybe half the amount required and it'll show.

As for arsenal, different situation they aren't in the situation were to get a top player they have to take a bit of a risk they can buy the ready made article.

I’m not suggesting we are getting anyone for a fraction of £40m.

But spending £40m on a player that got 6 goals last season across 4 games and he failed to oust a 34 year old Danny welbeck doesn’t strike me as this top class talent everyone is making out he is. I mean comparing him to Alan shearer? No wonder so many young players fail to make the grade.

He may turn out to be fantastic, but there’s a big question mark about that.

Maybe the manager last season had a spat with this player and that was the reason he picked players in there 30's instead of him.

Maybe. But also could be a very talented lad that just needed to find a club to call home and a bit of man management. We used to do very well with this kind of player back in the day.

If it's between this lad and Beto starting every week, then sign me up for this lad.
Only he's always injured so he wouldn't be starting every week.

We paid buttons for Reid, there was no risk.
Yes, that's true. However, just on an injury level the parallel holds...and Ferguson has a lot more of his career ahead of him than Reid did when he arrived at the club.

Reid was a crock by the time he got here. The rest is history.

…and Gray but different times, even then they weren’t a huge investments and those two blokes had extraordinary character and desire to play (Reid’s shin in the Bayern game, ouch). They were a key part of a ‘perfect storm’ that was the ‘85 squad assembled by Kendall.

Yes, but the argument that Ferguson has an injury record is not really the clinching factor in consideration of signing him. What footballer hasn't had long injuries before switching clubs? It's just a part of the industry.

If people dont want a player here then they'll clutch at straws like that.
