I'm thinking of parking up in Altrincham and getting the team in from there (I work just outside London so heading up from that direction)

Probably a good shout and I believe some of the other posters have mentioned Alty and Sale (which is the next stop up the line) although I am not sure what the parking is like at either.

The Ashton Old Road car park I mentioned has been fine before, just a case of how to get to it to avoid busy areas, if you go up the East Lancs or M62/602 then you hit Regent Rd & go past Salford Lads Club before getting on Mancunian Way & I think is still down a lane due to a sinkhole but a 'mare at the best of times anyway.
If I was travelling to there from L'pool I'd consider going past Manc Airport, onto M60 toward Stockport then jump on A6 towards Manc then A6010 which would take you past Ashbury Station to the car park I mentioned.

For me to get to it avoiding Mancunian way etc from East Lancs Rd & potential motorway shiz would be through Worsley & Eccles into Trafford Park, out the back into stretford then through Chorlton-cum-Hardy then past Platt Fields where we used to park for Maine Rd then cut across to A6 & A6010 as above.
