I would love to see a strong everton side consisting of academy graduates, it would be something to be proud of. It's not fantasy to say it wouldn't / couldn't happen but the club has got to come up with strategies to keep hold of our kids.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I get more joy watching the young lads come through and make good than I do going out and buying some overpriced European who may or may not come good. I still think the most incredible and awesome accomplishment in World Football is Celtic winning the European Cup in 1967 with a squad composed entirely of home-grown talent; as all of the players in the side were Scottish, and all were born within a 30-mile radius of Celtic Park. But that's just me, I guess I'm just weird like that.

You're not weird, just a proper football fan! It's all about bringing through the kids. What Celtic did far outstrips anything Barca are doing now.

That's the dream :)

Always thought that was amazing aswell. Not sure if Feyenoord didn't do something similar in 1970 and certainly the Ajax and Bayern Munich teams were pretty much home grown. But The Celtic team was special. Scotland should have been a world force in the sixties when you consider that team and the likes of Alex Young, Dennis Law, Billy Bremner and even Snidey Saint-John. Loads of world class players.

I actually have that game on video stored away somewhere. Absolutely amazing team, and brilliant performance in that game against a very typical negative, defense minded inter team. Jinky jimmy Johnston was as good a player as any team in britain ever produced(apart from dixie of course(y))

The true measure would come if everybody had to rely solely on their youth. In that case I'd bet on Barça winning la liga consistantly with a strong challenge from Madrid and Athletic Club.

I don't know if they'd still win La Liga consistently (assuming RM are still spending crap loads of cash) -- they only won the league by four points didn't they? So the 50 million euros a year is buying them three points? I know they value the CL too obviously but their margin of victory domestically wasn't overwhelming so I don't think they could survive on youth alone -- that's a colossal waste of money if they could. Given how much they spend every year, they obviously aren't as confident in their youth. Still, hypothetical of course so no way to know for sure but the main point is, whether they need to or not, they spend huge sums every year.

I don't follow world football at all really -- is there a team that competes via their youth setup? Needless to say I don't want to hear about Barca (400 million on transfers in ten years) and Arsenal (100m+ on wages per year). I mean a team with truly limited resources playing in a league without any salary caps or spending restrictions which succeeds (more-so than our "success" of 6th to 7th place)?

Barkley, Rodwell and Gueye are the only ones that look first team ready at the minute, don't get carried away.

I would add Vellios to that list. Too early to call whether he's going to be world class but has some very good attributes (ie. touch, pace, work ethic, team work, 'football IQ' (something Anichebe lacks)).

I did say the true measure would be if everybody had to rely solely on youth. Including Real Madrid.

Plus, to be fair to Barca, the only players that they've bought in recent years that have really made a dent on the first team have been Alves and Villa. The rest have been expensive flops.

You should get that transfered to DVD and onto a hard drive. You know, to preserve it (and maybe host it so I could maybe make a backup for you as well (y) )

And which one of you bastid mod's edited the title??!?!?!?!! It was much more fun when it was spelled incorrectly!!!!!!

Fair enough.

... so, can anyone give me the name of a team who competes with a strong youth setup and no money (or does that team not exist in a reasonably competitive league)?
