If you were drawing parallels between Everton now and City back when Mancini was in charge, do you think that's a reasonable assumption? Back then City had bought frequently and expensively with some coming off and some not so much, but there was a reasonable backbone which with the sprinkling of world class talent really could perform from. I think Silva and James are very comparable to their impact on each club also - a bit of star quality is added that previously wasn't there. Aguero and RIcharlison even though different kind of attacking players match up in terms of positives. We also have a Joe Hart clone in goal!
I know every season is different, and this one is an oddball especially, but being a city fan, I would very much like to get your take on how we look this year compared to back then with your team. I know there's only 33 games to go so it may be a bit presumptuous. Either way where better to discuss it but in front of the rs lurkers on their thread!
I can see similarities. We had some world class talent (Kompany, Zabaletta etc) but they didn't know they were worrld class until Mancini got hold of them.
Mark Hughes had Kompany playing as a central midfielder and not a CB when he turned up. He promoted Joe Hart and binned of Shay Given. And to be fair for 4 or 5 years Hart was absolutely top draw. What Mancini did was drill them on the training ground, organised them but more importantly gave them confidence & belief and he taught them firstly how not to get beat then how to win. The change in mentality was astounding. With Hughes in charge we conceded 2 or 3 goals in virtually every single game. With the exact same players the defence became the best in the Premier League. I kid you not 4 weeks later they were unbeatable. You can see the confidence and belief in Everton coming through now. Compared to previous its off the scale. Just think how it will be in another 3 or 6 months time? Also when Ancelotti has had another couple of transfer windows and really put his stamp on the team and club as it does look like he will get the investment he needs. Mancini took City from just above mid table to the top 4 in two seasons. He then took City from 4th to Champions. I think he was the first ever manager to do that in the PL (I think). I see no reason why you guys cannot be a top 4 club within 2 seasons either. You are already the equal of Arsenal, Spurs and better than United. You have the new stadium to look forward to also which would be a huge boost. I'd say the future looks very rosy indeed for Everton. The only other thing I'd say is enjoy the ride. Ignore the haters & Ignore the media. As soon as you become a threat and start kicking the chairs at the top table their attitude will change very quickly. City were 'lickle city' everyones favourite comedy club. A joke and looked on fondly by the majority of other fans. Even after the take over it was OK as we didn't win anything for a couple of years. But as soon as we did...
Hope that makes sense and gives a bit of perspective. I genuinely wish you boys well. After what you have to put up with in your city you really do deserve it.
