..I have no idea what an earbud is but I like contributing to such threads.
Aren't they these?

I've splurged on a few > $50 earbuds before and never was really impressed.

I like JVC extreme fitness earbuds. They are about $20, comfortable, stay in your ear, the cord doesn't tangle and sound quite good.

Betron earbuds are supposed to be very good inexpensive brand.

Cheers for this, and all other suggestions.
Still not clear on one thing. Is it worth spending 300€ on headphones just for spotify on a phone. Is it polishing the proverbial or is the quality of the audio on Spotify good enough to warrant such quality cans? At what point does source material negate the difference between 30€ buds and 300€ ones?
I don't use Spotify, so may be wrong, but I'd imagine the music is compressed mp3 format, which is common. If this is the case, expensive earbuds would allow you to hear the harsh tinny highs and lack of detail in elaborate detail!

If they 'broadcast' in flac or some other lossless codec then a decent pair should suit fine. If not then I wouldn't throw good money at the problem. Rubbish in, rubbish out is the rule. Good speakers beautifully reproduce rubbish.

I'm an absolute audiophile nerd. I've spent enormous amounts designing and developing my own speakers and system over the years. Honestly, earbuds and headphones are very easy to get to sound pretty decent as they don't have to shift much air. While i'd not bother about the cost for speakers, I reckon if you're paying over £20 for earbuds then you're paying for a brand and the associated effect it has on his you look to others.

This is what I was getting at

'Spotify offers the Ogg Vorbis format at 320Kbps'. Game changer?

Quick search indicates it's not much better than mp3 and that, generally speaking, my pretty well rated 35€ buds won't be 140€ better if I were to buy Airpods thanks to the file format. Correct?

Ogg vorbis is very much better than mp3, and the sample rate you quote is acceptable. I've used ov in the past, but exclusively use flac (when I'm not using analogue) these days. Can't remember whether ov is lossless or not, but it certainly sounds much much better than mp3.

As I was saying before, technically all mid and high priced earbuds will be technically very similar. People pay a difference for what THEY like the sound of. This is the nub - you have to listen yourself. If you like them buy them. If you dont then swerve. I like a neutral sound and find the kind of stuff that is most popularly sold, to enormously exaggerate, or even create the bass.

libvorbis is also one of the coolest projects out there. Shame it's BSD licensed :/

I absolutely swear by Apple AirPods. Not only saying it as a fanboy of Apple but they are truly incredible. But understand some people don’t like Apple.

But you do look like the dude in the picture wearing them. Ie...a nobhead.

I wouldn’t recommend Beats EarPods. Really poor quality but their over the earphones are fine.

Just get Bose ones if you can afford them. Absolute quality but pricey.

yeah ive got beats Powerbeats 3, cost a small fortune.....they are a bit poo, pretty quiet to be honest, but I think that might be partly me using the wrong size buds so sound escapes, I have very sensitive ears so have to use the smallest of the 3 provided sizes, might be better if I was using the medium ones

I’m on the look for some decent Bluetooth earbuds as mine have died. I got some for about £20 off Amazon and they lasted 11 months before one of the buds stopped working, and their replacements lasted just over a year.

I don’t mind spending up to £50 or so but they have to be durable. Not even that bothered about the sound quality so long as they’re loud enough for the tube and gym. I’ve got some decent over ear cans for proper listening.

Any recommendations?
