i was swimming off the coast of Brazil and got caught by a rip tide and pulled out to sea. I was screaming for help. Waves started battering down on me and felt like i was in a washing machine. I kept trying to pull myself to the surface but ended up swimming to the bottom. Weirdly i had always remembered someone telling me not to panick and i didnt. I didnt breath in any water at all. Each time i managed to reach the surface i gasped fro air then didnt fight it at all when i was pulled under. Anyway, there wasa point where i gave up completely. I remeber thinking i would never see my new born niece and none of my family again. It was weirdly tranquil and peaceful but i accepted that i was dead. At this point i felt someone grab my shoulder and a surfer pulled me out of the water and out of the weird state i was in. From there we fought our way back to the shore. It took a while due to the currents and the size of the waves. I was exhausted and emotionally and physically when i got out and just collapsed. anyway, i would be up for dying like that to be honest it was so calm and peaceful. I'm glad i didnt die but it was the worst and best thing that ever happened to me. My tip - watch out for the red flags.

Nearly drowned once. Caught in a rip tide on Copacabana beach. Got caught up in it and couldn't get out and was being slammed aginst the seabed every 10 seconds or so. Would just get myself up to gasp for air and was slammed down again. Was running out of strength and genuinely believing my time was up when a coupe of surfers plucked me out.

just seen that after writingmy story. almost identical. Someone died the following day on the same stretch of beach. I was in ihla grande - lopes mendes

Just got flashbacks of a Bondi Rip, absolutely hammered me, every time I surfaced I got pummelled again into the sea bed and rolled around to where you don't know which way is up or down, somehow got rolled to the side and out of it, made my way back to the beach & collapsed flat out exhausted for about an hour.

I stress that at no point did I say the words "I just want my Mum."

Even turned a smoke down when I came too as well.

You would feel no pain at all burning to death as your nerves would be completely wiped out hence no feeling. The worst case scenario is surviving severe burns and regaining feeling.
Drowning to death terrifies me though.

Got turned over by a big wave in Kerala once, banged my head on the seabed and didn't have a clue which way was up. Those people who say you're life flashes before you at these times are talking absolute bollocks, I was too busy cacking myself.

Luckily found out that the way I was swimming was up so got out nonchalently, pretending nothing was wrong, only for the ex to ask why I had a big cut on my forehead. If I'd been thinking straight I'd have blamed an attack by a vicious school of sharks, but just ended up saying dunno and sat down feeling more than a tad dizzy.

Not really relevant, but it's the internet so I thought I'd share it.
