2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Love the mathematicians trying to justify us paying £100k a week for a striker who has scored the same number of goals as Michael Keane to sit on the bench or treatment table for the next three years.

I can’t remember this kind of discourse about a player ever. Did we ever pine for Victor Anichebe this way?

You'd keep him as maybe your 3rd choice forward who can be a bit of a nuisance when closing out a game.

But I just don't think he's ever looked composed enough on the ball or in front of goal, and combined with his injury record, it'd surely be hard for the club to justify spending star player level wages on trying to keep him.

I wonder if Moyes's comments on Delap were partly a bit of public negotiating strategy towards DCL taking reduced terms.

Sign as a squad option for 1-2 years with the aim of selling on in 6 months - 1 year. Too many players walk from here with no fee.
Small hitch to that plan....you need a willing buyer prepared to spend cash on somebody who will only have 6-18months left on a contract. It's simply rinse and repeat.

🤣 other than it’s actually £100k x 52 x 3 and £15.6m it’s still fantastic value for an England capped 28 year old for 3 years.

When you think Chermiti has cost more than that and contributed less in the last 2 years.

If he’s fit and plays 10 games or scores 5 goals we could flog him next year for £15m and still turn a significant profit
Touche on the math.

However, the rest of that post is comedy gold.

Love a fresh DCL to stay. Free from injury and a good pre season. New deal (less money) and not being first choice. But I don't know if that version of DCL exists. His finishing has been poor, got worse in fact. I don't know maybe move on fresh start elsewhere? It's up to him really. He can be part of a new era at Everton.

I have never rated DCL highly but after all of his injuries the Calvert-Lewis we once had who had great athleticism and would close down every ball is long, long gone - the only nuisance factor he has left is to his own mates.

I think retaining him just sends out totally the wrong message, for two main reasons.

1. It rewards astounding levels of mediocrity.

2. It stinks of a club that doesn’t back itself in the market, opting for convenience rather than creativity.

With us not being in Europe then whoever is our 3rd choice striker is more fringe player than squad player. We just don’t need someone on DCL’s wage level to perform what is likely to be a very nonexistent role.

I absolutely agree with all this - my opinion is the sane, we have to gamble to be more ambitious.

I was more trying to see it from other perspectives and maybe even the club's, from a risk management perspective - if we can't get better in and over the line - and we know what Everton are like in this regard - then it could be pragmatic to keep him on a short term contract, even though I personally would hate that outcome.

Or

$100,000 x 52 is $5.2m a year x 3 equals 15.6m
So, you reckon boy wonder, and footballers in general, get paid weekly? Does Moyes give them all a brown wage packet each Friday afternoon after training?
By your calculation he's actually on £11,518,354 using todays USD to Sterling exchange rate 😉

I doubt anyone thinks he's worth 100k p/w now but with him unlikely to drop to 50k and 2nd/3rd choice it probably means he should leave. The pity is losing him for nothing when we almost got 30mil/Minteh+£ last year for him

Is it worth getting another contract rather than lose him for nowt when he clearly can be a solid squad player for us?

I mean he has been injured a lot, and when fit playing under a team that didn't attack or make chances.

He links the play well. Even if he doesn't rediscover his scoring form, doing what he did yesterday in games to help us get out is still a very useful option from the bench, so I can see why they would want to keep him

Your calculation said £100,000 a week is £400,000 a month. That's incorrect - that would only give 48 weeks when there are 52 weeks in a year.

But we’re going to lose him for nowt whether he stays now or signs for another 2-3 years so I just don’t see why we should kick the can down the road. Nobody is ever going to pay to take him off us, the boat to sell him has long left the dock.

And I don’t see how he can clearly be solid squad player for us? Is that how you’d describe his contribution this season, solid?
