I find it hard to criticise Cahill (coz I love him), so I won't, directly. I also hate to make the dreaded compasrisons, But I will, directly.
I remember making a post about the difference between our 84-85 team and our 85-86 team. With deference to the majority on here who are more tactically aware than I. Or, in layman's terms, just know their footie better than me, I offer my (simplistic) view.
I remember watching a live game on telly in autumn 85 against Notts Forest at the City Ground. We lost 1-0 and I noticed a Change from the fluid, total football formation of the previous season to a more static 4-4-2 system. Granted, we had 2 top notch forwards and could have won a gorious double playing that system with a bit of luck in key games. But we relied too much on our front two and it became predictable. I see a similar thing with Cahill. He's top notch in his role but I feel he does limit our options. We haven't obviously got the quality of Steven, Sheedy, Stevens, Mountfield to way in with double figures and tee up countless other goals. We do, however, have a team that has evolved and can play some really nice stuff. I do feel that we tend to play to Cahill's strengths too much, as I feel we played too much to Sharp and Lineker's strengths in that (ill fated) 85-86 season. The lad's got a vital role to play at the club and I love the bones of him but he definitely shouldn't be an automatic starter. Imo.
