I was thinking whilst walking the dog today at how poor the club are at marketing the various services they have on offer and got thinking of the potential of sites such as GOT to generate cash for the club, whilst also making a bit for themselves.

Check out our affinity page http://www.evertonfc.com/club/everton-marketplace.html for instance. How many people here know we do half of this stuff?

Affiliate marketing is a pretty old concept whereby sites such as GOT run ads for a company and any sales eminating from those ads generate a commission for GOT, plus of course a sale for the club.

There are quite a few Everton fan sites like ours that must get thousands of visitors and Everton seem to be making no money out of any of them. The Facebook page I created is gaining around 30 new members each day. Again, nothing from the club to monetise that.

To give an example. The club has an Everton credit card, which is a basic Masteca rd but with the benefits tailored to Everton things. Such cards are very common and the WWF have their own credit card. I run ads for this card on my environmental website and it generates over a thousand extra visits each month for them and many sales. They win and I win from the commission. It really is a no brainer.

Have a look here - http://www.omguk.com/programmes.asp?sector=Credit+Cards

Looking through that list it seems we're the only club not doing this. I could start promoting any other football club in the Premiership except the one that I love. Crazyness.

The whole topic of 'moving to the next level' has been oft. discussed recently and it baffles me why the club aren't using such a well trodden path to help generate money from fans that don't ordinarily give the club anything financially. It would also help to reward people like Danny who put a ton of effort into effectively marketing the club for no financial reward.

I don't know if Danny or anyone here has any official communications channel with the club and could suggest something like this, or alternatively if any one has the contact details of the commercial or marketing head at the club.

Well, Bruce, like you I work with some web advertising, and I have just about given up with expecting anything extra from the club in this area.

It's got to the stage where it's enough that the TV works after a fashion and that I can occasionally buy stuff from eauction or the megastore. But despite numerous emails to the club and the web provider responsible about not being able to buy tickets online, I still have yet to receive a reply, let alone a solution (and according to what's online from other people, I'm not alone).

I agree with you that they should be reaching out more to the thousands of people who are a community online in different forums, rather than doing whatever they do with regional supporters' clubs of 20 people (I know some are bigger!). But unless they worked through someone who had half an idea how affiliate marketing works, like zanox or CJ, I wouldn't expect wonders.

In many ways it's not just gaining a commercial advantage. Football is a unique industry in that we are all fans of the club rather than mere customers. The club has at its disposal hundreds/thousands of people who at the moment willingly volunteer time and effort to help the club. Danny and Dylan for instance put in heaps of effort pushing the Everton brand via this place. They don't do it for financial gain (although as in my OP it would be nice to get something back I'm sure) but because they love this club. How many other people out there would do likewise in their chosen area out of love for the club?

The underlying business paradigm (ugh) of the last decade has revolved around understanding your customers and using that knowledge to serve them better. At many companies this is hard because customers have a functional rather than friendly relationship with companies, but Everton is different, they have thousands of advocates that would probably be only too willing to help out, to lend their expertise to improving things, if only they were asked.

My best contact at the club was transfered out last week, [Poor language removed]

Bruce, go straight to Wyness as a blue but also on a business footing. Tell your knowledge of the club (shows motivation), your qualifications and sketch briefly round your ideas, he has a reputation for at least listening. Failing that try approaching Sharpy via the club website and ask him who would be best to contact, best of luck mate they need someone like you(y)

Mine came up for renewal and a plain MBNA card arrived when I contacted them they told me the agreement with EFC had "come to an end".Sad really gave me a kick everytime my wife (from RS family) took out the card in shops.

The lack of interaction between Everton and unofficial sites is definitely disappointing - the only interaction being Everton providing match day images to unofficial websites to use - two small images often weeks late which have evertonfc.com watermarked in.

looking at it from their side, how do they recognise a website/fansite? they wouldnt want to be accused of favouritism, an element of impartiality is required, also, what funds are available to the IT department for such ventures? the way i hear it, a great deal of the everton business structure has been downsized or outsourced.
