"Giger's Alien" (1979)

This is boss - a full half-hour documentary covering the Swiss surrealist oddball artist Hans Rudi Giger and his "sexoid biomechanical" set and creature design for Ridley Scott's Sci-fi chiller "Alien".

Some great rare behind the scenes footage from the set and the artist in action. Super creepy voiceover and a strange funky jazz-synth soundtrack.... definitely worth a watch this.

Atari: Game over (2014)

A look at the rise and fall of the video game giant and the lasting impact of the "Video game crash" of 1983. Everyone my age (44) had an Atari at some point or another - they were awesome, despite the simplicity they were trailblazers for home entertainment. I wish Atari and Sega still had home consoles - Playstation and Nintendo are still great fun but it was brilliant years ago with so many systems and so much choice! Atari were the originators of an entire industry which makes more money than Hollywood these days!

Really enjoyed this despite understanding very little of it. Its the story of that first fuzzy image of a black hole that drew a collective 'meh' from the community of global smoothbrains. As well as more fully appreciating the incredible amount of work that went into the project I learnt many things, for example: while there are many great names in science, few are as excellent as Silke Weinfurtner. However the key lesson for me - despite having a reasonable grasp on pop astrophysics, my younger ambition to perhaps pursue a career in the field would likely have been dashed early on. Despite being a fairly intelligent person, next to these folks I'm as thick as a tyre sandwich.

Raiders! (2016)

This is without doubt the greatest fan-film ever made, and it's just a brilliant story in itself.

A bunch of 12 year old kids who were in awe of Spielberg and Lucas' grave-robbing Nazi-smashing bull-whipping fedora-wearing hero back in '81 set out to replicate the entire movie SHOT-FOR-SHOT. On a primitive home video camera. It took them 7 years to complete... Apart from the flying wing scene.
You really have to see the ingenuity and resourcefulness of these young film-makers - it's incredible. Almost every major set-piece is mirrored and not without humour....
You all really need to see this before you die - it's an absolute marvel.
