As we know we haven't won a trophy since 1995 and even longer since the League 97.

Regardless of the reasons our great side of the 80's had to split up, why is it taking so long to regain our mojo.

Liverpool haven't won the League since 89 and yet they believe every season they can do it. Our record at big grounds and against big teams in knockout competition is absolutely atrocious.

So, have we got an inferiority complex, have the Club and the fans not only accepted mediocrity but have come to expect it. Have we convinced ourselves we are second best and any result against these lot is a bonus?

Will we ever shift our 'knife to a gunfight' image?

It's all down to players being good enough, unfortunately ours ain't.
Major investment over 2 or 3 windows would help, but we compete for "lower" end product, we don't have a chance going head to head to sign a player that the champions league teams want to sign.

You haven't got to look far to realise we have. The conspiracy theories, the media, the refs. It's embarrassing. 'If that was us we wouldn't have got it' , sort of attitude. We certainly have some sort of persecution complex. We're always hard done to. For me, Moyes got it in our heads, lickle old Everton with no money fighting above their weight mentality. And we carry it on to this day.

Doesn't look like things have changed then.

Sorry meant '87, Mout pointed it out and I still missed it to change it.

Take the RS out of the equation and in fairness we have a decent home record against the top teams. I have no idea why this can't be transposed to the away legs, although I do think we've been a bit unlucky in some of our recent games, especially against United and Chelsea (yesterday excepted of course:blush:). But I agree, the away record really is dreadful. Under Moyes and, so far under Koeman, we have gone into these games with the focus on containment. i.e not getting beat. Despite his many faults, at least under Martinez we used to have a go in the away games and, as mentioned, I think we were unlucky in some of them.

Also, you need put things into perspective. These top teams have much larger budgets than we do and are able to attract much better players than we can. So you would expect our overall head to head records to favour the so called bigger clubs.

I haven't specifically analysed our cup records, but in recent years I seem to recall that we have both won and lost matches against Liverpool, United, Chelsea and City and lost to Arsenal once. I would say that's pretty much in line with what you would expect from our relative head to head records. In the semi's/finals, we have had a tendency to bottle it, but I generally put that down to the other teams having more winners with experience in such games, plus that extra bit of quality.

Not sure about you Cheese but, as a fan, I don't have any real feeling of inferiority with the bigger clubs. I go into the home games expecting to win. If we draw but put in an a decent performance, I accept that. If we lose I sulk and fume as I don't like losing. With the away game I always think we have a good chance of a draw and, if we play well, maybe a win. I'm usually content with a draw but don't think that's too unreasonable. On the rare occasions we win I'm ecstatic. If we lose but play well or are unlucky, I'm usually diplomatic. When we lose and play poorly, I sulk and fume again.

Don't even get me started on the RS. I think it's gone back so long it's engrained in us, both the club and the fans.

I think 5-0 at Stamford Bridge answers that question. No Naisy to come on and score a hat trick only the Tom Davies sub woke up our remaining first eleven. We were totally outclassed in every way.
