Is it a joke really?
Ano lad we've got Hitz to cover him anyway. If he stays on for another year he'll be 37 half way through the season. Pathetic from the club if this happens.
I want him to go as soon as simply because he will never be a bit-part player. Under Moyes he is our captain, and this season one of our first midfield picks. Which is simply outrageous as his legs went years ago.
I'm not blind, I can see that he offers stuff off the pitch and on it he's an experienced defender who reads the game excellently. But his legs can't keep up and he is offensively useless. He wouldn't get into central midfield for Wigan, so if we think we're even a top 7 team then he can't be playing there.
Of course we have a small squad and injuries but Neville's a high earner who can't keep up with the pace of the game. As a utility player, wage aside, I don't mind but he's too big around Everton for want of a better word; he can't be a bit part player. I just want him to go and Jags to be the new captain. But I know it's not going to happen yet. *sigh
It actually is.
To be fair to Moyes i think he is well aware of the limitations that Neville has in midfield. It's unfortunate that he has been the consistent fall back/default option when things havent worked well in midfield, but it's not true to think that he is simply Moyes' favourite and he will always be first choice for defensive central midfield.
After Carsley left we brought in Castillo - big thighs but was never really up to it, Moyes never fancied him really.
Fellaini was eased into the role, only for Moyes to realise (correctly imo) that he is more effective as an attacking midfielder.
Rodwell was groomed to play there, but frankly, despite having all the ability, he simply never impressed as much as everyone hoped.
Gibson, i think is clearly our first choice defensive midfielder but is a perma crock.
So he has tried to change it, but without ever having any money it's been difficult.
As much as he irritates me and as much as we can never get to 'the next level' with him in midfield, he is also subject to some simply absurd abuse on this forum. He works hard, can organise a midfield and hasnt started any of the only 4 games we have lost this season. Personally i wouldnt want to lose him from the club.
So we get rid of him and pay who there? He plays there when Gibson, Fellaini etc are out.
We can jib him off as we have outgrown him but we cant complain if a Baines or Fellaini decides to move on if they have outgrown us. Fairs fair.
Buy a replacement ? We can't just keep playing these guys until they're 50. I'm sure he's on a fair wage too, enough to bring in a central midfielder who can do more than a five yard pass at least.
If we could buy a replacement I think we would mate, but we're Everton, we're skint. Perhaps if/when Heitinga/Fellaini/whoever goes, we can buy a new midfielder. But then we will have a weakened position somewhere else, such is our position.
We did sell a DM to tranmere, like. And bought another one off city.
Though I do realise that would require playing someone under 22 years old.
