Everton defender Sylvain Distin has praised the emergence of a clutch of young players from the Everton Academy.

With finances tight at Goodison Park boss David Moyes is once again looking to youth in order to freshen up and strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign.

Forwards Conor McAleny, Magaye Gueye and Vellios as well as midfielder Ross Barkley have all featured heavily in the club's pre-season fixtures.

Defender Distin is impressed with what he has seen so far and believes the youngsters can make an impact in the Premier League this season.

"We've got Conor, Magaye, Ross Barkley, and Tollis (Vellios) is doing well when he comes on and that's good news for the club," Distin told the club's official website.

"Ross is good in training and he's doing well during the game and he's exactly what we need, some fresh blood like that to just come in and make me feel a bit older and just give something a bit different to the squad.

"He can be a great player but we've got a few more players like that."

Our youth players are not going to be much use in keeping an average set of players in the premier league! They need to be introduced into a winning side. They shouldn't come in and be expected to carry the likes of Anichebe about the pitch.

If you concentrate on what he actually said rather than what's being spun, he just underlines the possible options one or two kids in the squad can bring. I'm pretty sure this isn't him rowing back on his judgement that senior players need to be signed.
