Distin absent from training.

Richards? Always out on the injury table, been struggling for fitness with Fiorentina. Wouldn't play as back-up to Coleman.

Nastasic rejected our loan offer. I'd bite your arm off to take him in January though but again we'd have to pay through the nose.

Shawcross is an integral part of a Stoke side and captain. I'd honestly be surprised to see him go for less than £15 million

Any club paying £15m for Shawcross deserves to get relegated. I take your point that Stoke would ask that price, for the reasons you stated - but he's not worth anything like that when looking at his playing skill. I'd be trying to pinch Vlaar from Villa for that kind of price, or Van Dijk from Celtic.

Distin can do one. Was here 2 many seasons, big game bottler and uber prone to idiot feck up mode.

Keep jags though, but get a new captain he's too damn quiet!

Put Barry in defence till the window…??

Oh yeah definitely I wouldn't pay £15mn for Shawcross but that's what Stoke would ask as they have really built a team around him and when him and Huth are together they are bloody intimidating. Shawcross can play the ball out but he's not comfortable doing so as, say Stones is - certainly not as much as Martinez would want. Van Dijk is the one I'd go for (and with Celtic playing worse than us he might have his ear bent) - I'd have gone for Alderweild as he's looking fantastic for Southampton but nvm.

Lots of 20/20 hindsight here. I'd love a list of posters who thought we should prioritize a CB this summer. There was talk of LB and RB, but nearly everyone sensibly enough was focused on a forward and an attacking winger. Suddenly with some posters on here we "were crying out for a CB and Bobby recklessly ignored the rot." Martinez out! Well let's see those anxiety-ridden posts lads. Fickle.

I don't know, I'd be reluctant to criticise him, even if it's true.

He has nothing to do with his time now and could well decide to come in here and beat each and every one of you with his flute.

One slap of the flute between the shoulder blades would soften your cough for you.

So we shouldn't have addressed the fact we only had one striker (not even fit) on the books and should have prioritised defensive recruitments (for the 3rd tightest defence in the league) over it?

What utter nonsense.

Why would it be either/or in terms of strengthening in each area of the pitch?

No idea if it's true or not, but who hasn't had an argument with their boss at some time ?
Life goes on and, 98 times out of 100, you work something out.

Equally he might just have been injured, either way, I'd lay odds on Distin playing for us again fairly soon.

Duffy ain't all that Dave.... Believe me . Not the answer at all.

...now we have an injury to Stone we have one recognised CB to call on....and what happens if Jagielka gets injured on international duty? We have a mountain of games to get through and any player we had in that position would become vital.

Shawcross also has a Stoke contract until the middle of 2018. I personally think it would take closer to 20million for Stoke to sell him.

Micah Richards should have been top of the list alongside Nastasic and possibly even Shawcross. In my humble, but sincere opinion.

Where we'd find the £18m to do that like...

TBH, I'd have gone back for Lescott on a free. He knows us and we know him. And I'd have offered Celtic £8M for Van Dijk.

That's gone though. But I refuse to believe there isn't quality to be had here or in Europe for a reasonable price.
