I absolutely despise Taika Waititi. Get ready for the twee comic relief character who looks huge and scary but is really just like a normal earth blokey guy who says normal earth blokey things

When a big earth-shattering explosion happens, this comic relief character will say something like: "Well, that was quite loud, wasn't it?"

I actually really like Taika. What We Do in the Shadows is a fantastic film and I'm no fan of Marvel, but Thor Ragnorak was pretty good too. He has a way of taking ideas that have been done before and turning them into a fresh output - even Hunt for the Wilderpeople showed that.

He wouldn't be my number one choice by no means, but if it gets rid of the nostalgia-driven JJ Abrams then i'm all ears. He won't be drawn to sentiment, that's for sure.

I actually don't mind him or his films I just don't think it's a good fit for what I'd like to see from Star Wars. That said I recognize I'm no longer the market they're catering for.

Think they have seen he works well with Jon Favreau and it will be him as much as Taika driving these projects.

Aye, my missus thinks he's great, which means I've had to sit through more of his films than I'd like. I liked Hunt for the Wilderpeople, was a decent pic. But the rest of his films I've seen just seem to hinge on exactly the same joke where he subverts some traditionally scary or evil trope into some sort lovable, wouldn't-hurt-a-fly joe.com reader

What We Do in the Shadows: "We're vampires, but we're not so bad, we're just blokes at the end of the day"
Thor Ragnarok: "We're big space gladiators, but we're not so bad, we're just blokes at the end of the day"
Jojo Rabbit: "I'm Hitler, but I'm not so bad, I'm just a bloke at the end of the day"

He's a bit like Wes Anderson, who I also hate. He has one thing that he does, and if you like the thing you'll love him. If you hate the thing, you hate him.

Yeah, No.

Can't stand him McB. Sorry, I know Thor: Ragnarok is your Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane is my Citizen Kane. He's completely ace.

See any other Directors pretending to be a giant hot dog? They got no game v Taika.

I'm not gonna judge the film until I've seen it. Truth be told I've not been a fan of this guy's work in the past, but a good film or two here and my outlook could be changed. I'd not be surprised if his film/s are set in this new "High Republic" era that Disney are pushing in their books right now. It would give them pretty much a blank slate to do as they want and so long as they're sensible and don't play fast and lose with the lore they'd be free to do in any direction they want without hardly any backlash.

When you kill off the main villain after barely scratching the surface with that character it was always going to leave a problem of who the final film's dark protagonist would be. The choices were 1. Kylo Ren, who was slapped around by Snoke and beaten in the first film by an untrained Rey and quite clearly the character that would be turned from the dark side. 2. A completely new character that you have to learn to fear inside 2 hours to get any pay off in the end, which totally defeats the point of having a trilogy and an overarching storyline. Or 3. Dig up the ghost of Darth Vader or the Emporer so you can at least have a connection but either takes a dump on the sacrifices made in the OT.

So out of three impossible choices they picked the least worse one from the point of trying to make that last film as interesting as it could be.

That said, the best ending would have been Rey finding out she is a Palpatine (with him still being dead) and turning to the dark side and Kylo actually has to go the other way to destroy her. But there was more chance of me waking up to find I have the same bank balance in my account as George Lucas than anyone greenlighting the golden girl switching sides.

So again they did the best they could after the round headed one screwed it up.

In all fairness though, at the end of the Last Jedi, Kylo had taken over everything to do with the First order. He'd killed his mentor Snoke, killed his Dad, the actress who played his Mother had died in real life. Kylo Ren was the best thing to come out of the new trilogy, they'd have made a far better film, with him struggling with the power after he finds out Leia is dead and going completely dark. A similar fate to Anakin. His was the only character anyone had cared about throughout, and his death at the end was poor.

The problems with the new trilogy were all set up in number 7, they made Rey, First Order, Kylo Ren, Starskiller etc. all too powerful from the start, and just re-worked the story from the original trilogy. At least 8 took it in a new direction and showed us something new. That's why the Mandalorian is more appreciated, or Rogue One, even Solo (by me at least), they show us different storylines within the same Universe.

I like Waititi but superficially I don’t see him dragging the movies away from the nostalgia buzz weak humor of the latest movies.

just give Star Wars and Jurassic park to Christopher Nolan or somebody more “serious” along with trillions of dollars and see what can be done with a different approach.

I still haven’t managed to watch more than 10mins of Solo. If you’d have told me 20yrs ago that there’d be a SW movie out for over a year that I wouldn’t want to watch I would have laughed in your face. I think we are really clinging to positives with almost all of these movies and I’d like to see the whole thing done again but more betterer like. Press the history eraser button
