pele was good but he never played for another club outside of brazil (ny cosmos, but that doesnt count!).....maradonna was a much better player,he ripped up argintinian football than went to barca still very young, was cut down by "the butcher of bilbao" recovered, went to napoli and dragged them by the scruff of the neck and took them to the top to win the league and uefa cup, what a player........the ball looked like it was glued to his foot.......oh yeah, when he was doing his bit in italy,he also had a bit of spare time to help argintina to win the world cup!..............stoned out of his head........allegedly!!!!

Can only really give credence to the opinions of those old enough to have seen full games (several) of both Maradona and Messi in order to make the necessary comparisons. I used to view Maradona as an - or, rather, 'the' - untouchable God of football but being born in the twilight of his career ('91) I was far too young to properly appreciate his contributions on a pitch. I think not only Messi's records/stats (which I hate to let 'speak for themselves' in any situation, because they only ever tell some, rather than all, of a story) but, having seen him, his all-round contributions to any give match are probably unsurpassable.

My favourite footballer ever, but I think Messi has been the most consistently excellent player to have played the game. Only in the last year and a bit have his levels dropped after 8 years of playing at an amazingly high standard.

Argentina all the way in the World Cup for me!

The other thing people forget is how tough both Pele and Maradona were.

If they had the degree of protection today's players like Messi and Ronaldo get then their stats would have been much more impressive.

Pele was once literally kicked off the park in one 1966 World Cup tie.

Back then, only the sort of challenge that gets a yellow card these days was even a foul. You'd get a red these days for the sort of challenge that would only attract a booking and to get a sending off, it would have to be the sort of assault that would put a player out for a while.

And yet, they still shone like a glowstick in a blackout.
