I was 7. I remember my Dad coming home on the friday evening and telling me i better get an early night as we had a long trip in the morningI was about 11 yrs old no chance of a ticket My late father sent my older brother down to London with a ticket pinned inside hi coat we had family there my late father's brother had sent it up he lived in Burmansy a mad blue like the rest of his sons - my brother was in the Wednesday fans end......
He had managed to get me a ticket but in a different pen(Wembley was split into pens separated by concrete walls). My Mum came down to London with us and sat outside Wembley whilst the game was on. We even met Dixie Dean at the beginning of Wembley Way who was being interviewed. I asked for his autograph and he said just walk with him and he would sign and have a chat when he had finished the interview which he did.
My Dad then managed to swap one of the tickets so we were both in the same pen. We got in when the turnstiles opened at 1pm so I could put my beer crate up against the wall so i could see over it. I cried after 4 minutes but my Dad said dont worry son there are 86 minutes to go. Im not sure what he said to console me when Wednesday went 2 up!
The rest is history...
But days dont get better than that. Its funny but i can remember more about that day than last week...
