Dear Mr. Lerner...

I follow football to regulate excess serotonin.
...please sell. That's how Cleveland Browns fans are reacting to their horrid start. They're 0-3, and it's been an ugly 0-3 at that. Imagine, fans petitioning an owner to sell to improve a seemingly hopeless team.

I wonder what the Villiains make of all this? Thought you might find this interesting.

Fed-up Cleveland Browns fan starts on-line petition asking owner Randy Lerner to sell team | Cleveland Browns - cleveland.com - - cleveland.com

"We, the undersigned Cleveland Browns fans, ask Randy Lerner to do what is in the best interest of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland fans, and the city of Cleveland, and sell the Cleveland Browns.

The product on the field is unacceptable."

He's a nice guy but I think the recession's hit his finances pretty hard. Villa's high spending summers are probably over now, but it seems harsh that Cleveland Brown's want rid of him. Maybe he hasn't invested in them for a while? But you'd think manager would cop it rather than the chairman - especially one so respected this side of the pond.

Short version (honest - this is short, there's a lot more):

1. bad for many years - "rebuilding since 1964".
2. already lost the old team to Baltimore where it has won one Super Bowl and have been steady winners since.
3. new franchise since the 90's - has always been owned by the Lerners, and has always been dreadful.
4. a great history with the founding coach Paul Brown - probably the best team in the game from 1950 -1964, and had ultimate legend Jim Brown (the best ever) - he is to football what Jordan is to basketball.
5 - New coach and GM this year - the coach is a young d**khead who has already lost the team and can't settle on a QB. The last team he coached fired him (NY Jets) and are now the talk of the league under new direction, and the Browns are an affront to sport to watch so far this year. I'd just as soon sweep out the Kop as watch this lot. Lerner hired this guy.

It's as ugly as it gets. Their relationship to the champion Steelers is analogous to ours w/ the RS, except that the Browns are s***e and we are not - they're right up the road from Pittsburgh. They have a big, steady, passionate fan base despite all this. As you might guess, they hate the Steelers like we hate the RS.

Nice post Mezzrow (y) Glad you could fill me on some info there. Well, Lerner seems to favour placing a huge amount of faith in his coaches. He's basically handed O'Neill complete control of the way Villa is run, but he made a pretty good choice there. Strategy can backfire if you don't pick the right guy!

Every NFL team spends the same due to the salary cap so its not about money. Most good owners in the NFL stay out of the football side of things and choose good people to run the team (Steelers, Patriots). Lerner has been notourious to choosing the wrong people and sticking with them at the Browns and his baseball team the Washington Nationals.

This hasn't been the case at Villa. I think he likes the Villa more than the Browns and the Nationals too which helps.

The worst NFL owners are the ones who run the squads like a glorified fantasy squad and are always in the middle of signing and drafting players (Washington Redskins, Cincinatti Bengals). These owners are never successful.
