Deadwood

It seems that every transfer window a thread like this appears. It's one of GOT's most unpleasant traditions. It's like saying, which Everton players would you like to take a pot at, insult, or belittle today ? Of course, it's never explained just how Everton are supposed to "ship out" these players - as if Kenwright has got a wad of offers in his back pocket to buy Tony Hibbert off us. It's pure fantasy to think that a club like Everton will have a strategy of selling off certain players in the middle of their contract, and as I'm sure you're well aware Martinez has said very clearly that he intends to do no such thing right now. Even if Eto'o is sold, this proves nothing : it's probably something that he and his agent have engineered, I don't imagine Everton weren't planning to sell him. That's how most transfers happen : an offer is made, maybe because it's known that a player is approaching the end of his contract, maybe in an attempt to unsettle the player. Anyway, it's funny that the players who fans are eager to "ship out" are always the ones in which there's not much market interest and wouldn't command a large fee, while the players who would get us big bucks are the ones who all sensible people want us to keep.

Getting rid of the deadwood does not bring in any money, and will not allow us to improve at all.

Its not football manager, and getting shut of Hibbo, Ossy and Gibson will not let us by a super -star.

Cuts the wage bill tho - some of those mentioned in this thread are amongst the highest earners. It allows us to bring in frees/even players with a bit of hunger and something to prove perhaps...on less per week deals.

Its all about good well researched and targeted recruitment...I am not convinced we have such a system currently

Except you'd have to pay the players off. Might as well have the use of them if you're going to shell out that much.

well none of them are out of contract this window, and there's a big difference between getting rid of Deadwood and not renewing a players contract when it's up. You're not actually cutting anything because they don't have a contract anymore.

Second Ian McShane pic in a week (otherone was 'Lovejoy')

Now all's I need is to someone to call Besic (or preferably Pelle) a sexy beast and I'll be all over it like a 180 score in darts.

So.. what you're actually asking for is for the Club not to re-sign people who aren't worth the money, which is a call by the manager as to what he thinks a players is worth to the squad/team as nobody signs a player that isn't worth signing.

I still think paying off is a better option anyway. Think of the savings in medical bills on some of those crocs...am I right in thinking that if they are paid up to their contract on early release they cannot sign for another club in the originally contracted time frame? Or if they do the pay off is adjusted/reclaimed?

Paying them off finishes the contract allowing them to sign for whoever they want (if inside a transfer window as the Club holds the registration until the next window reopens). No readjustments, you just get the wages for the rest of your contract and kicked out the door.

A lot has been said about what we need to add to the squad, a keeper was my own priority at the start of the window but giving Joel's performance recently I wouldn't fancy David Marshall for £8m now.We know we need another defender and we are crying out for another winger or two, in order to add the 4/5 more players we need Roberto needs to get rid of the what I would call Deadwood currently at the club.

Howard :may seem harsh but he is on good wages and a long term deal, would we want him goals Monday night against WBA. He needs shipping out A.S.A.P.

Hibbert: Baffled how he warranted a new contract, I am all for loyalty but the shower across the road only offered an all time hero a 1 year deal. Why?? Because it was the right thing to do.

Osman: See above

Distin: I can see why he got an extension, was very good last year, but his time is up.

Alcarez: Cost nothing, been unfortunate with Injuries, but problem is he is always injured.

Pienaar: Been a great wee player for us, but never elite and doesn't score enough goals for a winger. Time is right to ship him out.

Gibson: Was a great signing for £1m, problem with him is injuries. Seems to be 4th choice Cm at the moment and with young players with big reputations like Ledson and Dowell in the ranks it makes no sense having him on the books.

These are the most high profile player's that could be shipped out and the would free up enough wages to sign 3 extremely good players. The squad could be bolstered by the "amazing" youth player's Bobby keeps talking about.

Sorry if there is a thread that already covers this, Admins feel free to ship me out too

Also known as the walking deadwood....

I think Galloway was bought for the long term, Alcarez has been unfortunate in saying that. I would hardly call him a flop as I often see him labelled. Browning is knocking about somewhere too, it makes me wonder how good these young lads really are when they haven't really had a sniff of first team action as bad as we have been defensively.

I'm sorry but how can Alcaraz be seen as anything other than a flop? Constantly injured and usually dreadful on the rare occasion he does make it onto the pitch.

Need replacements before shipping out. Some will come through from the U21s but not enough. The potential will not be reached....or at this point is exaggerated.

starting CB's Stones and Jags.....cover is weak.....will Browning come through quick enough, not sure, we need to add here....until we do Distin and Birdman must stay musn't they ?

wingers.....Mirallas is our only winger of note. McGeady, Pienaar, not for me. The rest are stop gap players out of position. Oviedo, Eto'o, Barkeley, Naismith. We need to add here....we are super weak.

Def Mid....Besic and James Mc......Barry will be cover whilst others rest, move in and out of form.....because we play two I wouldn't lose Gibson until Ledson pushes him out.....but that will be a while off.

Osman good cover in a number of roles in Midfield....on his day great....not too many days anymore....keep until others come in / break through.

Hibbert...solid and dependable. No longer first choice, but we are not looking to replace Coleman and Hibbert is a solid back up....he stays for me.

So I guess, we agree on the same problems but I have a different response. Keep, until we replace or youngsters break through. None of these players is blocking progress of youth.

Good post

Too many fans play Fifa/Football Manger not realising to move a player is not as easy as it sounds and replacing them even harder. All very well saying get rid of Gibson, Pienaar, etc. but some of these players are on big money. Pienaar, I think, is on 50 grand a week so who's going to pay him that at his age with his recent injury record? The Everton squad was notoriously tiny under Moyes, at least we now have numbers. Those who think we're suddenly above back up players like Tony Hibbert and Leon Osman need to remember we're not Man City or Chelsea

Osman
Hibbert
Gibson
Pinear
Distin
Howard
Alcaraz
Mgeady
Eto

All need replacing IMO . Most don't play or are s h I y t e

200k would be a conservative number in my opinion. Total guesses here but Howard 50k Distin 50k Gibbo 40k Alcarez 30k Hibbert and Ossie 30k and Pienaar would be surely 50k giving he left for a higher wage to spurs in the first place. At least 300k based on absolutely no knowledge whatsoever. I know he would get 4 good 75k a week players instead of the named players.

Salary List 2013-2014

Tim Howard £35,000
Sylvain Distin £40,000
Darron Gibson £45,000
Tony Hibbert £30,000
Leon Osman £50,000
Steven Pienaar £60,000

Don't know about Alcarez
