Dead bodies on Everest

You'd have to be a complete lunatic to climb one of these mountains. It's basically suicide. Even if you don't die it's basically like you've attempted suicide but survived it!

Alison Hargreaves. Name of the lady I mentioned above. 2nd person ever to summit Everest unaided (no oxygen, no sherpas) did a face of the Eiger heavily pregnant, Soloed all the great north faces of the alps in a single season - a world first. Died on K2 at age 32, leaving a 6 and a 4 year old.

I'm sorry but how selfish is that. Climbing mountains when pregnant. Now she's left behind two young children. Obviously RIP and all that but jeez...

Climbing mountains is pointless and stupid.

She perished with a few others when a storm rolled in on top of K2. 1995. I suspect there are a few ways at dealing with such a loss. Grateful she lived for what she loved.

You're right that putting yourself at risk when you have two young children is selfish and irresponsible, but to me there's nothing pointless or stupid about the spirit of adventure. Life would be very dull indeed if we always did the safest possible thing.

Hate to say it but I agree with this.

...and I agree with this too.

She was young and to wait at least until her kids were older and understood the danger their mother was undertaking might have been the best option.

It's all hindsight though.

She has been dead 16 years, there have been hundreds more that have died and that is just on mountains. Did Ali consider his family taking all those punches to the head? Senna his children when he drove that car? and what of astronauts and lab rats?

Mountaineering has been my life for years, and it's something I love and hold dear to me, but I do agree with Nik's words...When you take on the big mountains, you have to be selfish, and self-obsessed otherwise you would never take that first step up the wall, you would never take the decision to leave your family for months at a time. And yes... you do know that you might never come back......So yes it was a selfish act, and high-altitude mountaineering is a selfish, self-focused, and incredibly risky sport.

I've got a family now, and they mean more to me than any mountain, so my days on the big nasty peaks are over, but man it was fun while it lasted.

All those other things seem to have a point to them. Boxing- a profession. To win titles. And prize money. Astronauts- space exploration. Profession. Etc etc.

I suppose I've never done it so I don't 'get it' but to me there are other things you can do than climb mountains for a sense of acheivement. Even throwing yourself out of a plane has less risk. I think if you haven't got a family then fair enough go climb mountains till your hearts content (even though I still don't see the point) but when you have, you have responcibility there so go do something else to get your kicks.

This is the point
