Homepage Article David Moyes On Merlin Rohl

Certainly seems rumours around how much the staff at Everton rate this lad are true based on Moyes' comments;

Its that age old question.

James Rodriguez 21 starts + 2 sub 1776 mins. 6 goals and 4 assists.

Yerry Mina
25 starts + 4 sub 2282 mins 2goals and 1 assist
23 starts + 1 sub 1939 mins 2goals
11 starts + 2 sub 845mins
7 starts 596mins 2 goals

Merlin Rohl 4 sub 91mins

At what point do you look at the likes of James and Mina and think that their limited minutes of quality make the games missed a necessary evil?

With Rohl, Moyes can say hes the next Zidane but if you look at his injury history and game time over the past few seasons then he's never even played half a seaons worth of minutes in the bundesliga.

Tyler Dibling played more premier league minutes last season than Merlin Rohl has ever achieved in the Bundesliga.

This may sound silly but to have athleticism and speed around the pitch is one thing, but using them as an injury prone player surely leads to more consistent and serious injuries.

James was of such rarefied quality that it was possible to make that calculation for much longer than it ever could be for somebody as mercurial as Merlin. Could we replace Big Yerry? Eventually, yes. James? Nah, still haven't.

But when you're kicking off away at Man City needing a result for Europe and James is posting selfies from a jet on the way to Colombia, well, you have to draw a line somewhere...

You could see glimpses of high potential in the few small outings he’s had. I think he could be something special, obviously the injuries are a big concern.

Just have to give him time to get right and integrate him in correctly.

High hopes - hopefully he can fulfil them.

“He can play a number of positions for us as well. We can play him in several positions and he would still do the same job.

That really deflates me to be honest. Utility players are useful, but I don’t want a team made up of lads doing a job in positions, without excelling in one and being left there.

When I was digging into Armstrong's stats I got curious and adjusted Röhls stats to per-100 touches in his 21 year old Bundesliga season.

The passing was still very poor but the ball-carrying was absolutely bananas. Like waaaaayyy at the top. If we can reliably get a system where he can receive the ball and drive with it, but not really have distribution responsibilities, we could get a lot out of him.
