Okay, I hopped off at 11 last night. Someone explain the Henen deal to me. This is what I think is happening:

We wanted him for £1.5m, Olympiakos offered twice that, he went there and now we loan him for a season. He won't play for us and he'll go back to Greece where either he'll be bought for huge money because he's boss or he'll fade away into nothingness.
 
I'm presuming that it went something like this ;

1. Anderlecht wanted to sell him to us for £3mill
2. We refused and Olympiacos " bought him " for £1.5 mill
3. We loan Henen from Olympiacos paying a loan fee of £1.5 mill
5. As part of the deal we have the obligation ( not option ) to buy him for a further fee of £500,000 at the end of the loan.

In conclusion we would get the player for £1mill less , Olympiacos make £500k for nowt and Anderlecht lose £1mill on their valuation.

Sharp practice if the above scenario is correct but not unlawful
 
Has anyone got any proof that we have a deal in place to buy Henen at the end of the season? No mention of it on the OS, so if he impresses, he's still an Olympiakos player and they can choose to keep him. If he's no good or gets injured, then we just wave goodbye to him anyway and wish him well on his future career in Greece.

Doesn't look like a great deal for us either way.

By the way, is this Eric Dier all over again?

But he was sold to Olympiacos for £3mill, not 1.5 mill

What makes you presume that? As I understand it, only assumption 1 is correct.

And where is assumption 4?
 
For those worried about Henen turning into a star while Olympiakos profits from Everton's development work:

This is a player (an 18-year old player at that) who couldn't get a game for Monaco B last year. The odds of him looking like a £10 million player over the next year are very slim, and Everton will probably already know that, having watched him for the better part of a month.

The worst case scenario is he's a headache and we've wasted a small loan fee. The second worst scenario is we have to pay ~£5 million to Olympiakos next year because he's that friggin' good.

Judging from Henen's past, if he's any good and Everton want him, this is where he'll wind up.

And then we will have paid far more than Anderlecht wanted for him.

Where's the "good" in that good deal?

The good is that for £2 million we've found out he can not only play football, but he also has a chance to play football at a very, very high level.

I don't think anyone knows what to expect from Henen. He's said to have a ton of talent, but his head isn't screwed on right. No one has gone on record saying they think he'll make it at Everton.

Either way, it's a fun story to track.
