I'm starting to edge towards one of two options: he's ill, or he's in jail.

If he was in jail he'd have them wrapped around his little finger* and have smuggled in access to the outside world. OR gotten message out through someone who has done their time to sign up and post a message to her is know that the messiah is okay, just been caught planning to smash the capitalist system once and for all.
