Dave Hickson appreciation thread

Against Aston Villa, Joey,Liverppol won 2-1, Davie scored the two, Peter McFarland scored Villa's reply, both teams clapped Davie off the pitch, he had left Everton for Villa, only played twelve games for them before he was sold to Huddersfield Town. After that Villa game I waited for Everton's score to be announced over the tannoy, wish I hadn't, we got trounced by Newcastle United 8-2, that's eight - two.
The week before the RS V Villa, I remember the everton home game at half-time, the boxing advert for The Stadium did their usual lap
of the ground, then a bloke with a board on a stick walked across the pitch from the 'Boys Pen' area (I think) to the players tunnel, on the
board it said "If Dave goes, We go", it seems a lot of them did, judging by the crush in the kop. The demonstrator was not approached by
stewards or police. (They obviously agreed with him). By the way McParland was a 'P' not an 'F', he also scored Villas 2 in the '57 final
against United.

McMagic, yes you are right it was a 'P', what a player he was, tough as they come, I don't think his goal against United, when he knocked the goalkeeper and the ball into the back of the net, would have stood today, same as the Nat
Lofthouse goal for Bolton v United a couple of years later, again in the FA Cup final.

I've just watched that video that Groucho put up. I wish footy was more like that (but with the modern pitches).

Hickson charging into the keeper and them all just getting on with it, fab. Nowadays if a goalkeeper shook it off and got up, we'd give them a Fair Play award.

Everton's excuse for selling him on was daves disciplinary record evidently it was the way he played even in practice matches running through brick walls for his side - My late fathers hero even went every week to see him play for the reds yest a born blue like me he idolised him what dave lacked in skill he put in a shift in effort, I read his autobiography, He admitted himself he put it about , but as you say the game in those days was a mans game his scoring rate was very good the uproar when he left in those days was outrage his autobiography is a great read compared to the modern game as you rightly say we see now;)

Joey66 I rememember at the time that Davie went, he said Cliff Britton, the manager, told him he needed a rest, this was in August of that season, Davie told the manager that he had just had a three month rest in the close season and asked to go on the transfer list.Davie was as nice as pie off the field, nothing like the rampaging footballer on it, giving his opponents
not a minutes rest or a bit of peace. There was a story in one of the papers at the time about a fan went into the barbers shop close to the ground and said. "Has that b-------d signed for anyone yet" the barber was cutting Davie's hair at the time just said to the fan " He he is, why don't you ask him". Davie just smiled. I met Davie loads of times, as a young boy
on the number 3 bus going to Goodison Park and many times when I was grown up and Davie was always, always the same man, easy to speak to and easy to get along with. He looked on it as honour that fans took the time to talk to him. Not like a lot of today's players who haven't got time to stop and have a gab.
