I havent found a comedian that has outraged me,there are some I find unfunny,Chubby Brown for example I just find tedious, but if there was a comic I found offensive I simply wouldnt go and watch the show

Much like the Bill Hicks bit where he get's confronted after the show: "Hey Mr. Funnyman! We're Christians and we don't like what you said!"

"Okay... Forgive me."

Me neither actually

I haven't been to that many gigs for the big "name" comics really

Seen the likes of Ross Noble, Dave Spikey and Al Murray and enjoyed those

Going to see Ben Elton in person for the first time in October. Really excited as I've been a fan of his work since I found one of my parents old "Man From Auntie" audio cassettes many years ago

hence why i linked all those references, including stories of comedians getting thrown out or having to sign 'no-offence' clauses.

You can ask people to sign whatever you want to perform in your venue. I'm not keen on them but they aren'[t prevalent. I'm questioning whether it's such a big deal. You haven't answered anything else I've asked that is quite important to the issue

again, all those links rather support the idea that it is a big deal. what else have you asked?

Aye. You're referring to the punch-up/punch-down idea.

punch-up: Tories, white males, conservatives/rightwingers, Christians...basically the 'priviliged'. It's ok to satirise these groups.

punch-down: non-white folk, muslims, 'poor' liberal students...basically the 'oppressed'. It's not ok to satirise these groups.

Or rather - think about the targets you are aiming at, why you are aiming at them, and what the intended outcome is. It doesn't seem such a bad thing to do to me

They don't really. They are discussing it, doesn't make it into the great deal. Independent article - people like Andrew Doyle complaining yet have a sold out run at the biggest comedy festival in the world? Then there was a one-off misguided behaviour contract.

Who has had their career terminated because of an okay joke that was taken the wrong way that wouldn't have done 30 years ago? What has Ricky Gervais stopped saying because of the attacks on his free speech? Where are the hundreds are dying comedy clubs that would have previously survived?

sounds like you're saying Outrage Culture isn't a big deal. within those links there is more detail, some answers to your questions if you're genuinely curious.

i'll give you a few names who've had their comedy legacies damaged due to the PC age over the last couple of decades: Jim Davidson, Freddie Starr, Bernard Manning.

This legacy-death has affected the perceived freedom the current generation has.

So you think it’s a bad thing people don’t respect Davidson, Starr and Manning?

I’m guessing you don’t go to a great deal of comedy if you feel that way? There is some great stuff out there that doesn’t seem hampered by much.

i'm saying their legacy-death has affected todays' comedy climate. i'm saying this is a big deal, i'm saying many who work in the comedian industry are saying it's a big deal.

is this bad? that's a matter of debate.

as i said previously, my personal favourites for laughing are the non-offensive deadpan surrealist types, tho' i do enjoy the philosophising of Hicks/Carlin, they don't make me laugh out loud so much.

The reason their comedy legacy died is because it was bigoted and cruel and, to be honest, not particularly great - it's very dated even ignoring the racism. However, Davidson still tours and still has places he can perform and people who like him can see him.

People can still say pretty much whatever they want, audiences don't have to like it and people don't have to put it on. The liberal left are not killing comedy, they are not forcing people to stop performing, they are not stopping voices being heard.

and again, those links i shared say otherwise...

...and your opinions on the comedy legacies of those non-pc chaps is just that: an opinion.

Im fine with comedians causing offence so long as the jokes are actually amusing and witty, the trouble is that a lot of right wingers who screech about free speech all the time don't factor this in and just back any comedian making offensive jokes regardless of how well delivered the joke is... they seem to find the 'being offensive' part the funny bit rather than the actual delivery and wit behind it.

For example I've been a fan of Louis CK for years but his comeback gig was just straight up trash tbh, really lazy material that basically just sounded like a middle aged dad ranting about todays generation.... and yet just because it was a bit offensive the right heralded it as some amazing piece of comedy even though it was without question the most half arsed material he's ever come up with.
Oh it definitely goes both ways. My favorite comedian by far was Mitch Hedberg and he was one of the least offensive comedians on the planet. Some comedians go for shock value rather than actually being funny and like you said- it’s lazy. It doesn’t make it any less viable to me to be offensive if you can do it right.

Jerry Sadowicz had his TV career terminated because of a joke that became mainstream 30 years later on. And is still one of the absolute greats of stand up. He also never performed in Canada again after the opening 30s he did at Just for Laughs in the mid 90s.
