its for sale near me & tempted
How much? I'd ride a direct carbon spesh from China no prob if I'd researched and bought it myself - had plenty of carbon wheelsets that way. But secondhand is a different story - be fine for a pub bike but not for any serious mile bashing imho.

bloke reckons it was sold to him as a Ghost although the headset looks too chunky when I do comparisons, just needs a new spoke he reckons.
£200 hes got it on for

Decent price that tbf if it's in good order - 200 is like the floor for any non-BSO these days. Looks like its been ridden by three different-sized people at the same time - seat post is set back, slammed down, with seat all the way forward.

wheels look like Shimano wheels but those may be clones as well. Whats the groupset on this? Is this a fixie or a narrow 1x8 or similar? that might help identify what bike this is, but it looks like a hodgepodge of parts to me.

I thought that tbh, he sold it. He has another for sale but reckons I ask too many questions... he's an hours drive ffs course I'm gonna try work out what it is, i nearly set off to wakefield the other day then realised it was a 2005 GIANT frame & forks

this is the other for £325

has a cpl of broken spokes & he says it's a 9 speed but has a 10 speed cassette, so repairs & parts required to be right really. If I found out it was worth as much as the trek i wouldnt mind so much, again he cant tell me much about it. Might turn up with a ton & say "this is deffo robbed mate, a ton or the bizzies are coming."

Helpful advice needed (so I've no idea what I'm doing on GOT)

I've been going out cycling every day for the last few weeks on my mountain bike. Usually only 5-10 miles on my lunch break on reasonably flat roads. Almost every single ride I have someone on a racer/road bike cruise past me like I'm stood still so I'm thinking of getting a road bike as well.

I have a budget of around £150 so I'm obviously looking at second hand bikes. What kind of things do I need to be looking at to get the most my money? Would literally any road bike have me riding faster than on my mountain bike or do you need to get a certain high standard of bike to see any real performance improvements?

If you're buying in the UK your experience may be different from mine, but here are my observations as a new cyclist/used bike market survivor:

1. Prices for used bikes are very high right now; some bikes that would have sold for $300 (maybe less) 2 years ago are selling near their original new price...
2. But you can get a great used bike still; I'd look for a high quality build (not a world beater, but there are some really solid builds)
3. Something not too old, maybe 5-10 years old is perfect age range
4. All parts in good working order, no obvious defects or excessive wear on the components
5. It must fit you, don't stretch and buy a bike out of size for you

After that, have fun (and be safe).

*Also, there's no need to go faster, although it's fun. If you're just riding for exercise/good health then get out and have a good time on what you own.

Thanks the advice.

I'm not looking to be winning races but at the moment I'm struggling for time to go out for long rides so if I can do 16/18 miles on a lunchtime ride rather than 12/13 that would great.

When I was younger and running a lot I switched from measuring distance to measuring time and it was a good switch for me; I don't know how that correlates to cycling, but toning down the measurables is helpful to me.

But riding a faster bike can be fun (I "upgraded" bike last year from a straight bar "city" bike), and even more important IMO is getting a bike that rides more comfortably.

I made a switch from a Muddy Fox to the bottom of the range Giant way back when (think it cost about £300 brand new) and it was light and day. It felt like I barely had to pedal.

Any road bike will be quicker than your MB. I have both and there is about 4mph difference for a similar effort. Will take a bit of getting used to the harsh ride though it's like sitting on a comfy arm chair on an MB compared to a road bike!
As others have said getting something that reasonably fits is the most important thing to begin with so do a bit of research with your measurements. Good luck but be warned it's highly addictive and you will be lusting after an exotic Italian super bike in no time lol
