I agree with both of the above posts mtb shoes will be fine, some roadies may turn their noses up but at least you won’t walk round the cafe like a duck!
I really cannot get my head around clip ins so I use normal pedals on my road bike and wear old vans and my full Lycra.
get the funniest looks.
any of you on strava so I can see your cycle adventures?
I’m Ess Tee.
had no idea this thread existed and has got me excited!
)!
Yes mate, I'll give you a follow.
Would really recommend cleats - once you get over the initial fear/awkwardness of clipping in, it becomes second nature and you get so much more power. I can't believe what's happened to me in the last eight months (@Bruce Wayne)!
I did the four horsemen on zwift the other week - 4 hours! Wouldn't normally be my cup of tea but I did it in a group which made a big difference, plus each climb really breaks the ride into sections so it felt fine really - just rode it steady all the way zone 2, zone 3 on the Alpe.Got some shoe covers on order, and thermal socks (been using my dad's spare pair for the last few weeks).
I'm only managing to get out once or twice a week atm, so just trying to take it steady and consistent when I do go.
We've got a trainer set up with Zwift, so using that for interval training. I can't really do long rides on it, as I get bored (at the end of the day, I'm still in a garage looking at a screen) - so instead I use the training bits to get 30-60 minute sessions in.
Had a lot of issues with the bike in September and that cost me in terms of fitness, the running has suffered too. Saving up for a good road bike of my own (currently using my dad's mate's old Jamis) to get early in the new year. Thinking of a Ribble (by dad's recommendation) - dunno if that's what anyone else would recommend?
There's usually at least one episode (usually at traffic lights) where you forget you're clipped in, panic, and fall over. A right of passage.

Elephant & Castle, so the usual route takes me out towards Oxted, Toys Hill kinda area. When I drag myself out it's usually early to avoid the traffic. Coming back in on Sunday it was like a sportive was on. A constant stream of riders. Not sure I'd like that as it must be a pain for motorists and the last thing you want is an angsty driver trying to rush past you in a gap that isn't really there.I've seen this so much it just adds to my fear of roundabouts.
I do feel it is inevitable that one day (probably next summer) that I get some clip-ins but for now I am happy in old vans.
I managed to get up number ten in the top ten surrey hills a couple of weeks before getting hid with covid. That was some feeling.
Cycling has completely got me through lockdown, the summer holidays and the year. I have embraced it in a big way and even retired from all football so I had more time to ride and was fit to.
I am obsessed now.
Where is everyone based? I am 30k from both surrey hills and Kent hills so feel very lucky in that respect!

There's two other big routes, the mega-pretzel and the uber-pretzel, that I reckon I'll tick off. The biggest one, though, is a real tester as it is extremely tedious - something like ten laps of Greater London flat.

Yeah, it just kind of gets to me that I'm still in the garage. It's the same with running on a treadmill in the gym - I always have to go and do intervals on a treadmill, whereas I can get out on a run and do a nice 30 minute steady one.
I'm not a speed freak but I like to keep my rides up (outdoors this is) above the 25kmph mark for hilly routes, and 26.5-27 on the flatter ones. I'm managing that atm - at my peak in June-August, I was averaging up near 30 kmph on some rides on the flats, and just felt great, plus the bike was working perfectly at that stage. It's mainly that at that speed, I know I'm working and in Z2-Z3 with pushes to my threshold.
My wattage was up at 170-190 avg and now it's about 140-160 I'd say, so working on that during the Zwift sessions. Did "Emily's Short Mix" the other day and that's a killer. I'm due an FTP test as the one I did 3 weeks ago was at 195 (though it was the first one I've ever done so unsure if it's going to be spot on).
My running hasn't dropped off loads, but I can notice the difference having done less cycling. It's probably a build up of fatigue - I've been doing yoga and a bit of bodyweight work to mix it up, but definitely plateauing a bit, so looking forward to getting the new bike in the new year and then the spring rolling around. Got the Strines and Holme Moss on my list for the spring, as don't fancy doing either in the winter really.
Will possibly check out those Zwift routes if I get into a group. I've been that busy with work recently I've just been fitting them in when I can.
