Not you as well...

Never raced on a climb over 1500m
Never raced more than 10 days

Not convinced of his GC credentials... yet.

The thing is, I'm not sure there will be any climbs over 1500m. I'm also inclined to think that the field will be pretty threadbare, especially as Ineos and Lotto seem to be putting all of their big guns into the Tour. It seems ripe for someone who is a strong time trialist and who can hang on in the hills.

Ordinarily I wouldn't give him a chance against the true big guns, but the Giro this year seems to be as good a chance as he'll ever have.

I've no idea who's going to the Giro this year, but we all remember Cadel Evans (funnily enough, Remco's body type reminds me a lot of Evans) exploding all over the Monte Velo in 2002 in his first foray over 3 weeks. Your first grand tour, especially as leader, is a step into the unknown. He doesn't really have anybody in the team with experience in controlling or leading a big race either and Wilfred Peeters is the last man I'd want in the car in that scenario.

I think he will win a big one, I'm just not sure it's this year.

I'm seeing a kind of 1998 Giro scenario, with Remco in the Zulle role. Weak team, blitzing the first two weeks, taking big time in the time trials, and then fading. The problem is, there are unlikely to be big mountains to peg him back due to the weather, and I'm not sure the calibre of climber will be as high as it often is. Can Yates, Carapaz et al peg back major time on what are likely to be relatively small hills?

Milan San Remo tomorrow. Seems odd in August. 299km over a revised course avoiding most of the coastal stretch.
299 km in 30 to 36 degrees. Its a different race to the march version.
Perhaps an asterisk year for the winner?.

All of the mid-race climbs are gone it seems, so you would think it plays into the sprinters hands. Hopefully after what happened in Poland this week, they'll be racing sensibly if it is a bunch sprint on the via Roma.

Wout Van Aert just beat Julian Alaphillipe in a 2 up sprint.
JA attacks o the poggio WAA caught up on the descent.
New inland course very picturesque.
