Cup Winners Cup to return from 21/22 season

Someone mentioned this today in work, so headed to Google and low and behold, it’s true, UEFA plan to bring back the Cup Winners Cup ( though it probably won’t be called that) starting in the 21/22 season. Details are still to be ironed out, but part of the plan will involve reducing the teams in the Europa League to 32 (8 groups of 4)

The new competion will have 32 teams in group format

Further details are scarce at present, probably all TBC, but it will probably involve;

Top 4 nations will be seeded and won’t have to qualify for Europa League, same as
Champions League

I think it will be interesting to see how this will work with the champions league, as at present 3rd place teams drop into the Europa League, will this continue? Or will teams drop from the Champions league to the Cup winners cup? Or will teams go simply go out?

Would make the FA Cup suddenly have a point again if it's funded correctly.

Makes perfect sense. Now to abolish the stupid rule where the Champions League failures drop into the Europa League and totally obliterate any sense of it being a fair contest in the process.

It even says this.



It is more likely that it will be a Champions League-lite, with entry limited to teams from Europe’s weaker national leagues.

Which rules it out for English clubs.

There is no mention of needing to win a Cup to enter it.

It is more likely that it will be a Champions League-lite, with entry limited to teams from Europe’s weaker national leagues.

Yeah same, it looks like it'll be somewhat of a poorer europa league really. Champions of belarus vs champions of estonia etc etc

The idea as it always is seems to be make a third cup to put more of the small countries teams in and open up more CL spots for "big" clubs so we can make those in charge more money. Fantastic. Although in this case I do kind of like it as a restructuring of the Europa is desperately needed.

I did say in my original post that the competion would be a 32 team group stage, not a straight knock out, like the old cwc.

That doesn’t mean English teams wouldn’t be involved. It could well be that the English places are split, currently there are 3 Europa places, this could be changed to 2 Europa League places and 1 cwc.
Or Uefa could keep the Europa league places the same and give the top few nations an additional place in the cwc.
Alternatively we may see teams drop from the champions league into the cwc and Europa league, after the group stages

Totally agree, the biggest improvement to this may well be in the Europa league. I think the biggest gripe is that there are too many games in the Europa league, partly because of all the rounds of qualification

I’m not sure that will happen, I think some clubs like that “safety net”. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if the 4th placed teams from the champions league groups dropped into the new cwc

If it ain't a knock-out competition, it ain't a cup winners cup.

More likely they've figured out a way of collecting/milking more money from more people. People will hate it, yet undoubtedly it will work because people are weak willed.
