Correcting spelling/grammar on the Internet

It has long been something that annoys me greatly watching this endlessly occurring on countless threads.

If it was out of a personal quest to help others I might be more amenable but it is almost without exception used to break rhythm in discussion and to demean someone's argument by passively aggressively belittling then.

If you were at a dinner party and someone continously kept correcting everyones conversational grammar then you would quite rightly think them to be a loathsome social cripple who should be cast into the gutter without pudding.

Anyone who is engaged in this practice should be treated with extreme suspicion and has undoubtedly, if male, never put their willy in a woman.
*resists urge to correct the errors in this post* :p

If it can be understood should be the only real barometer for the informal written word.
All that matters is that you can understand what the poster is saying.

Therein lies the rub. Proper grammar is there to ensure you are understood correctly, and is especially important on the internet due to the lack of nuance in the written word compared to the spoken. See most of Joey's posts, or the wall-of-text rants that some people post.

I mainly do it now if there's a comic reason, or if someone's getting a bit above themselves.
This, and especially that.
I have decided its a losing battle on forums or social media

Most posts are understandable though as far as I'm concerned, occasional loss of nuance perhaps in cases, although to others perhaps it strikes the optimum chord.

I quite like it when people don't feel constrained by the need to write formally and post like they speak, sometimes you get more of a feel for the person.

The same type of person who criticises people for writing like that will then have no problem eugolising Irvine Welsh, Roddy Doyle, Anthony Burgess etc or any number of esteemed writers who write prose in a similar manner.

The only time someone i respect someone for correcting spelling and grammar on here is, as @chrismpw intimated, if it's particularly funny or someone is being particularly pedantic themselves.

Otherwise it's not groovy at all. Not one bit.
