Corners.

We are more lethal from corners than them Mossad agents with the guns that shoot round such.

EFC - Licence to be lethal from corners and free kicks to anyone but the opposition.

Barry hit's a decent long range pass sometimes, wouldn't hurt to give him a run of taking corners.

Good shout. I would rather just a floated corner coming in and aiming for the 18 yard box for everyone to tussle over. Keeper will never come out that far and you never know with knock downs. Baines has been absolutely awful with corners and only marginally looks better when Ross looks even worse or Mirallas. Luke Garbutt, now there's a man with a special dead ball quality!!

It's no wonder that statistically few corners are scored from them when the delivery is regularly poor with little determination by attackers to get their bonce on the ball. Players should believe they will score, not think that they won't.

Also, 11 men back to defend corners is irritating as well - bang it clear only to be received by the opposition & immediately put under pressure again. Even against WBA we had 11 back - until his substitution Mirallas would be ideal on the half way line for a quick counter attack or just to put pressure on the opposition defence.

Tbf, I don't think we concede many (or certainly haven't in recent seasons) from corners, so I understand the having 11 players back in our box, as generally, it works. It is frustrating at times that we don't leave anyone up as, like we've seen ourselves all to often this season, the quick break can be deadly, but there are bigger issues wrt corners, both defensively and offensively.
An opposite argument would be leaving one, two or even three maybe up field would force the opposition to bring some back, which frees up space in the box for defenders and goalie to move. Also the attacker, but I'd say that would favour the defending team more.

I don't think you can blame Martinez or Moyes for players not beating the first man. For me, that is solely where the players need to take responsibility and vary it/get something in the box, rather than aiming for that tiny perfect gap between 1st man and keeper.

This is not a recent issue

Before Baines, Tommy Gravesen used to take them with the same result....hit the first man!!

Mark Pembridge was actually a decent corner taker and the only decent one we've had since Andy Hinchcliffe 20 years ago. Arteta was 5hite at the too!

Garbutt is the future for corners!! Oviedo should take them if he's on the pitch too

There's a part of me that wants to see Garbutt and Baines on the left for Luke to take the corners and free kicks from there.
Both can attack, both can defend. Luke LB, Baines LM

I think we'd be more incisive attacking too: Strong attacking left side plus switch Kev out to the right, where he has an option of go down the line himself, ping it to Seamus, slip Rom in or cut inside himself. When Kev's on the left, defenders know he's going to try and cut across inside to shoot, play a runner in (or just give it back to Ross.... 9/10 times....)

Anyways, with Luke playing at least we'd be a threat to the opposition maybe instead of ourselves from corners

According to Opta, we have scored 2 goals from 112 'Corner Situations'. So that doesn't even mean directly from a corner ball into the box. 56 corners per goal.

Most teams take around 40 corners per goal.

I've always wondered why crowds get so excited over a corner.

They are lethal to ourselves,I've lost count of the times this season we've hit the first man and been hit on a swift counter attack:rolleyes::(

I've said this 100 x at the match, and probably on here too....SHORT CORNERS.

It gives us a much better chance, dragging the ball to the box and floating it, drilling one, shooting, squaring one up, so many options compared to just hitting it from the corner flag.

Unfortunately our fans let out a very loud sigh every time and Baines doesn't realise he has to move into play or he'll be offside.

What puzzles me is Roberto didn't fetch eleven men back for corners last season.

Gerald won the ball outside the box after a Barcodes corner was cleared and he sent Ross on his way to score his goal that night.

Why he has started doing it this season is a mystery......we even had our centre forward score an o.g. From a corner at Saints
