Scientists and mathematicians spend their lives literally questioning reality - hypothesising, measuring, experimenting, theorising in an effort to understand how things work. They are the true questioners of our society. Do you think conspiracy theories / thinking are common in this group of people?Wait, what?
People who believe conspiracy theories as you put it simply question their reality. I don't think there is anything different in their brain to invest in an alternative view of events. Because the truth is we are lied to about most things or misled at least.
The reason why so many more people question events is because there is much more of a wealth of knowledge out there. More footage , more accounts etc. Going back 20 years ago there wasn't access to such information .
I don't think it's anything different mentally, just those who question and those who accept.
Because it sounds like you would think that, from what you've said there. But IME it is not common at all - you would make an absolute show of yourself trying to articulate a typical conspiracy theory to a gp of scientists - because these people have the real tools to understand the natural world, whereas conspiracy theorists do not.
I guess that's what it comes down to - intellectual curiosity is not something confined to clever people, it's human nature to want to make sense of the world around us for everyone. But the tools aren't easy to come by.
