Going back, I would have to say Marcus Bent.
Weird one I know, but understand the circumstances. Rooney was on his way out, we were expecting a fair bit of money and instead of blistering out a few million on someone half decent - we sign Marcus Bent.
He was cracking in that 2004/05 side, worked his socks off and made a lot of room for the likes of Cahill to exploit.

Got to say that still remains a sore one for me, I'm sure the conversation went:

I thought McGeady would do better than he has. I don't quite know what has gone so terribly wrong.

I still think that he can provide the occasional glimpse of magic that can turn a game but we just didn't see it often enough.
