The video footage still shocks me to this day. Horrible. One small crumb of comfort though was the overwhelming charity shown by what seemed to be the entire world. Humans did well there.

Christ. RIP. As many will say it doesn't feel like 10 years ago, had their been any significant changes in early warning systems since?

Wasn't it 200,000 dead or something

Yet it barely registers to some.

The Japanese tsunami is another one.

People seem to of forgotten

Absolute horrible thing to happen and i pray the aid given since went a small way in helping those left behind from it.

I coudn't imagine going through a natural disaster like that. You live in fear of a bomb or a nuke or even a fanatic with a gun but never something as simple as the sea.

I was in Bali when this happened. News doesn't travel fast over there and it was hard to get any meaningful information. Went to an internet cafe and checking the news, each site was showing thousands more deaths than the previous one.

Folk we met over the following weeks each had a tale to tell, the most incredible (and possibly untrue) was of someone who was out on an early morning scuba dive off the coast of Kho Phi Phi, and claimed they felt a gentle buffeting as the tidal wave (before it built up) passed by. Got back later to utter devastation.

Isn't it strange how events like this can seem like yesterday but when you actually think about where you where at the time it puts it in weird place where the two don't relate. Maybe its down to the fact if you remember where you where exactly when it happened. I'm sure there is a German word for it.

In the Indian ocean, yes. A lot more sensors in the high risk areas, the pacific was pretty well covered already

Seen a story like that on a documentary. They were out scuba diving and noticed a slight change in the waves but didn't know as at the point in the sea there were at the wave was over around 40cm high.

My mate was there, we call him Tsunami Mark!

He was lying in a beach hut naked when it happened. He nearly drowned but managed to hang on to a tree as it all washed past him. Cut him to shreds. He then saved loads of people by leading them to a safe spot before it all came washing back.

Indonesia spent $130 million dollars on a new warning system and it went live in 2009 i think. Deep ocean buoys, tidal gauges and warning sirens to alert people living along the coastal areas were added. Indonesia suffered another massive quake out to sea in 2012, measuring 8.6 and with the new updated system, they knew a possible tsunami would hit the coast within 50 minutes, which areas of the coast to monitor more closely and the alert to the public (tsunami warning sirens) to evacuate those coastal areas was a success.

In addition to those warning sirens, people were also alerted via mobile phone. Also since the 2004 quake that killed so many thousands, regular tsunami drills are conducted and so men, women and children are now clued up on what to do during these alerts.
