Wow...time really does fly! No way this was 10 years ago!
In the Indian ocean, yes. A lot more sensors in the high risk areas, the pacific was pretty well covered alreadyChrist. RIP. As many will say it doesn't feel like 10 years ago, had their been any significant changes in early warning systems since?
I was in Bali when this happened. News doesn't travel fast over there and it was hard to get any meaningful information. Went to an internet cafe and checking the news, each site was showing thousands more deaths than the previous one.
Folk we met over the following weeks each had a tale to tell, the most incredible (and possibly untrue) was of someone who was out on an early morning scuba dive off the coast of Kho Phi Phi, and claimed they felt a gentle buffeting as the tidal wave (before it built up) passed by. Got back later to utter devastation.
Christ. RIP. As many will say it doesn't feel like 10 years ago, had their been any significant changes in early warning systems since?
Indonesia spent $130 million dollars on a new warning system and it went live in 2009 i think. Deep ocean buoys, tidal gauges and warning sirens to alert people living along the coastal areas were added. Indonesia suffered another massive quake out to sea in 2012, measuring 8.6 and with the new updated system, they knew a possible tsunami would hit the coast within 50 minutes, which areas of the coast to monitor more closely and the alert to the public (tsunami warning sirens) to evacuate those coastal areas was a success.Christ.
